Shani Dev as the God of Justice: Among the *Navagrahas*, Shani Dev occupies a significant position. His unfavorable gaze can mark the beginning of challenging times for individuals. He evaluates people based on their actions; essentially, one experiences the consequences of their own deeds. Those who inflict pain on others or engage in wrongful acts like theft, hatred, or deceit are subject to punishment, while those who act virtuously are rewarded. This is why Shani Dev is revered as the God of Justice.

The Origin of Shani Dev's Role

Why is Shani Dev considered the arbiter of deeds?
Shani Dev was born with a dark complexion, which angered his father, Surya Dev (the Sun God), leading him to question the integrity of Shani Dev's mother, Chhaya. In her distress, Chhaya cursed Shani Dev with leprosy. In response to this, Shani Dev performed intense penance to please Lord Shiva. Impressed by his dedication, Mahadev granted him a celestial position and declared that he would be worshipped as the God of Justice. This is how Shani Dev earned his esteemed title.

What is Shani Dev's method of dispensing justice?

Shani Dev is also referred to as *Karmaphal-data*, meaning the Dispenser of the Fruits of Deeds. He delivers outcomes based on individual actions. Shani Dev influences every person's life at least twice: during the *Sade Sati* phase and the *Dhaiya* period. *Sade Sati* spans seven and a half years, while *Dhaiya* lasts for two and a half years. Throughout these times, he enacts the consequences of one's actions, punishing the wicked while rewarding the virtuous. During *Sade Sati* and *Dhaiya*, individuals may experience a slowdown in their progress, with the wicked facing challenges such as legal issues, health problems, or accidents. Through these punishments, he aims to redirect individuals towards righteousness (*Dharma*).

Shani Dev is impartial; he treats everyone equally, whether they are deities, kings, or commoners. For instance, when Shani's gaze fell upon Ravana, it led to the downfall of his entire lineage. Similarly, King Harishchandra lost his kingdom and fell from royalty to poverty under Shani's influence.

Ways to Earn Shani Dev's Favor

Simple ways to please Lord Shani:
Observing a fast and worshipping Lord Shani on Saturdays is believed to earn his favor and alleviate suffering. Additionally, Lord Shani appreciates those who help the poor, the needy, and the sick. Donating items such as iron, black gram (*urad*), black sesame seeds, blankets, black umbrellas, footwear, and oil on Saturdays is also said to please him.

Reciting the Shani Stotra can further invoke Lord Shani's grace. Performing *Chhaya Daan* (donating one's reflection in oil) on Saturdays is another way to seek his blessings.
