Dive into the details of this important festival and its traditions.

Raksha Bandhan and Its Timing

Raksha Bandhan 2026 and Bhadra: Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on the full moon day (Purnima) in the month of Shravan. On this special day, sisters tie *rakhis* around their brothers' wrists during a specific auspicious time (*muhurat*), praying for their well-being, while brothers reciprocate with gifts and promises of protection. The timing of the ceremony is crucial, and many people are concerned about the occurrence of *Bhadra* during the festival. The presence of *Bhadra* can overshadow the festivities, as the *rakhi* tying ritual is traditionally avoided during this period. So, what implications does tying a *rakhi* during *Bhadra* have? Let's delve into the concept of *Bhadra*.

Who is Bhadra?

Who is Bhadra?
In mythological tales, *Bhadra* is known as the daughter of Lord Surya (the Sun God) and his consort, Chhaya. She has a brother named Shani Dev, the deity associated with justice, and her siblings include Yamraj and Yamuna, born to Surya Dev's other wife, Sangya. From a young age, *Bhadra* exhibited a fierce and aggressive demeanor, often causing chaos wherever she went.

The Nature of Bhadra

It is believed that *Bhadra* was born to vanquish *Asuras* (demons), embodying a figure that instills fear. Her dark complexion, large teeth, and long hair contribute to her terrifying appearance.

From the moment she was born, *Bhadra* began to obstruct *havans*, *yajnas*, chanting, penance, and other auspicious activities, causing distress among people. Even her father, Surya Dev, grew concerned about her disruptive nature. Consequently, he sought counsel from Lord Brahma.

Brahma's Intervention

Lord Brahma informed *Bhadra* that her actions were disturbing the peace of others. He decided to assign her a specific time to exist, allowing her to create obstacles during auspicious tasks. Thus, *Bhadra* was placed in the *Panchang* (almanac) to signify her presence after certain *Karanas* like *Bava* and *Balava*.

Her timing is marked by the activation of *Vishti Karana* on a lunar day (*Tithi*). While *Bhadra* is present on Earth, no auspicious activities are conducted; however, her presence in *Swarga Loka* (heaven) or *Patala Loka* (the underworld) does not affect Earth negatively.

Consequences of Tying Rakhi During Bhadra

What happens if *Rakhi* is tied during *Bhadra*?
If a sister ties a *Rakhi* to her brother during the *Bhadra* period, it is deemed inauspicious. This act may lead to increased negativity in his life, create obstacles in his endeavors, and hinder his success due to various challenges. Hence, *Raksha Bandhan* is not observed during the *Bhadra* phase.
