Understanding Purushottam Maas: Significance and Rituals
What is Purushottam Maas?
According to the Hindu calendar, the additional month that appears roughly every two and a half to three years is referred to as *Purushottam Maas*. This year, due to the occurrence of *Adhik Maas* (the intercalary month), there will be two months of *Jyeshtha*, extending the duration to about 60 days, from May 2 to June 29, 2026.
The Auspiciousness of Adhik Maas
This time is considered extremely auspicious for worshiping Lord Vishnu, engaging in charitable acts, and performing religious rituals. However, many wonder why auspicious ceremonies are limited during *Adhik Maas*.
Restrictions on Ceremonial Activities
**Why Ceremonial Activities Are Limited**
Astrologer Chandresh Sharma from *Astropatri* explains that conducting auspicious ceremonies is generally avoided during *Adhik Maas* (also known as *Malmaas*). In 2026, there will be no *Sankranti* (solar ingress) during this period, leading to a lack of solar energy. This absence is why ceremonial events (*Mangalik Karya*) are not performed. Spiritually, this month is dedicated to the remembrance and devotion to the Divine.
While some may disregard these traditions in today's material world, scriptures suggest that this practice is both logical and appropriate. During this time of reduced energy, focusing on worship rather than ceremonies is deemed more beneficial for one's spiritual well-being.
Ways to Seek Lord Vishnu's Blessings
**Actions to Earn Lord Vishnu's Grace**
Performing charitable acts and virtuous deeds during *Malmaas* is believed to attract the special blessings of Lord Vishnu, bringing joy and prosperity to devotees. This period is also seen as favorable for achieving *Moksha* (liberation).
To receive Lord Vishnu's blessings during *Malmaas*, it is recommended to bathe daily during the *Brahma Muhurat* (the auspicious pre-dawn period) and recite the *Vishnu Sahasranama*. When worshiping Lord Vishnu, devotees should offer *Tulsi* (Holy Basil) leaves and chant the mantra "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya." Listening to the recitation of the *Shrimad Bhagavat Katha* during this sacred month is highly encouraged.
Daily Rituals and Donations
Chant the mantras "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" or "Om Narayanaya Namah." Each morning and evening during *Adhik Maas*, light a *ghee* lamp (*diya*) in front of a *Tulsi* plant. Additionally, consider donating food, clothing, or *Malpuas* served in a bronze vessel, depending on your means and devotion, as these acts are considered highly auspicious.
According to religious beliefs, undertaking a pilgrimage to the Braj region (Mathura, Vrindavan) during *Malmas* is also regarded as immensely meritorious.
