Yoga in Unconventional Spaces

When you envision yoga, you might picture serene asanas performed in a tranquil setting. However, Heal-Station is redefining this concept by introducing yoga practices in the lively atmosphere of Mumbai's local trains. This initiative aims to transform the daily commute into a wellness opportunity.

Yoga: A Daily Necessity for Mumbaikars

For many residents of Mumbai, the local train system is not just a transportation method; it serves as the city's heartbeat, accommodating around 7.5 to 8 million passengers daily. Commuters often spend significant time in these trains, engaging in various activities, from playing games to celebrating cultural events. Ruchita Shah, the visionary behind Heal-Station, recognized this unique environment during her own travels from Borivali. She proposed that if people could engage in social activities during their commute, why not incorporate yoga as well? With commuters averaging two hours on trains each day, she saw a chance to promote wellness through the initiative "Travel Time, Yoga Time." Shah expressed, "As busy Mumbaikars, we rarely find time for ourselves. Why not utilize our travel time for yoga?"

Accessible Yoga for Everyone

Heal-Station's mission is to integrate yoga into public spaces, meeting individuals where they are. Shah emphasized that local trains are crucial to India's financial hub, and the daily pressures faced by commuters can be alleviated through yoga. Practicing yoga during commutes provides a practical solution for stress relief, physical rejuvenation, and a more positive mindset upon returning home. What began as a small gathering in 2017 has evolved into a comprehensive foundation, enabling numerous Mumbaikars to practice yoga while traveling.

Simple Practices, Significant Benefits

Shah highlighted several yoga poses that focus on breathing, such as parvatasana and sukshma vyayama, which can be performed even in crowded trains. These exercises help alleviate tension and enhance energy flow. Program Coordinator Alka Thakkar noted that even brief moments of mindful breathing or simple stretches can reset the nervous system and improve mental clarity amidst the chaos of commuting. The feedback from commuters has been overwhelmingly positive.

According to Shah, the typical reactions from passengers range from surprise to joy. Many initially taken aback by the sight of yoga in a train often become eager participants, reporting feelings of relaxation and happiness after just a short session.

Fostering Community Through Yoga

Beyond individual wellness, Heal-Station aims to tackle broader social issues. Senior Yoga Teacher Shanti Gala noted that practicing yoga together in public spaces fosters connections among strangers. This shared experience can break down emotional barriers and create a sense of community. The team believes that as individuals become more self-aware through regular practice, entire communities can become more empathetic and resilient.

Yoga for Healthy Ageing

As we approach the 12th International Day of Yoga on June 21, this year's theme focuses on "Healthy Ageing." With an increasing elderly population, yoga can significantly benefit older adults by promoting mobility and providing social interaction to combat loneliness. Shah emphasized the importance of community-based sessions for older individuals.

Embrace Yoga Anywhere

For the volunteers involved, the initiative has been transformative. Senior Yoga Teacher Volunteer Kiran Gilder shared that yoga has instilled resilience and mindfulness in her life. The core message remains clear: "Practice yoga wherever you are." Whether on a train, at work, or at home, dedicating a few mindful minutes to breathing and posture can yield lasting benefits.
