A King's Dream and a Serpent's Threat

Once upon a time, a king had a dream in which a benevolent sage warned him that a venomous snake would bite him that night, leading to his demise. The serpent, residing at the root of a specific tree, sought revenge for past grievances. Upon waking, the king pondered how to protect himself from this impending danger.

After much contemplation, the king concluded that there was no greater weapon than sweet behavior to win over an enemy. He decided to approach the snake with kindness.

As evening fell, the king arranged a bed of flowers from the tree's roots to his chamber, sprinkled fragrant waters, and placed bowls of sweet milk in various spots, instructing his servants not to harm the snake when it emerged at night.

When the snake slithered out of its den and made its way toward the palace, it was delighted by the warm welcome it received. Enjoying the soft bedding and the sweet aroma, the snake savored the milk placed along its path.

Gradually, feelings of anger were replaced by satisfaction and joy. As it approached the palace, the snake noticed armed guards standing at the entrance, yet they made no attempt to harm it.

This unexpected scene filled the snake with affection. The magic of kindness, humility, and sweetness had enchanted it. Initially intent on attacking the king, the snake found itself unable to carry out its plan. How could it harm a king who treated it with such kindness?

By the time the snake reached the king's bed, its resolve had completely changed. After a while, the snake entered the king's chamber and said, 'O King! I came to bite you and avenge my past, but your kindness has defeated me.'

'I am no longer your enemy but your friend. As a token of our newfound friendship, I present you with this precious gem. Keep it safe.' With that, the snake left the gem before the king and departed. This story illustrates a profound truth: kindness can simplify even the most challenging situations. A person skilled in good behavior can achieve everything they deeply desire.
