The Evolution of Fingerprint Identification: From Colonial Contracts to Modern Security

The Historical Significance of Fingerprints


Long before the advent of smartphones utilizing fingerprints for unlocking, these unique identifiers had a more straightforward role: ensuring promises were kept. On July 28, 1858, in colonial Bengal, a contractor made history by pressing his inked hand onto a contract, marking the first recorded use of modern fingerprint identification. Sir William James Herschel, an officer with the East India Company, was stationed in Bengal in 1853. Following the 1857 Mutiny, he became part of the Indian Civil Service and was assigned to Jungipoor (now Jangipur, in Murshidabad district, West Bengal). While working as an Assistant under the colonial regime, Herschel interacted with a local contractor named Rajyadhar Konai, who provided materials for road construction. To secure the agreement, Herschel requested Konai to imprint his inked hand on the contract's reverse.



In his book The Origin of Finger-Printing, Herschel recounted, "He was about to sign it in the usual way, at the upper right-hand corner, when I stopped him in order to read it myself; and it then occurred to me to try an experiment by taking the stamp of his hand, by way of signature instead of writing." This idea, while not entirely novel, was a practical solution to ensure accountability. Herschel aimed to deter Konai from reneging on the agreement by using the distinctive handprint as a safeguard against fraud, a common issue in colonial governance.


"He, of course, had never dreamt of such an attestation, but fell in readily enough. I dabbed his palm and fingers over with the home-made oil-ink used for my official seal, and pressed the whole hand on the back of the contract, and we studied it together, with a good deal of chaff about palmistry, comparing his palm with mine on another impression," Herschel noted. The success of this initial experiment led him to request Konai to sign another document in the same manner. Herschel later presented one of these contracts to Sir Francis Galton for a paper he delivered to the Royal Society in November 1890.



Over the years, Herschel recognized the benefits of fingerprinting, noting that the ridge patterns on fingers remained unchanged throughout a person's life. This realization led him to utilize fingerprints to combat impersonation and fraudulent claims. He began collecting handprints and fingerprints from government officials, pensioners, and prisoners, maintaining records that demonstrated the consistency of fingerprints over time.


To validate his findings, Herschel conducted a long-term experiment, gathering fingerprints from himself, British colleagues, and various Indians after relocating to Arrah in present-day Bihar in 1859. He meticulously preserved these records and compared them with new impressions taken years later. One notable comparison involved Dr. R. F. Hutchinson, whose fingerprints matched after 21 and 31 years, reinforcing Herschel's conviction regarding the permanence of fingerprint patterns. He even compared his own handprints taken 57 years apart, concluding they were identical, thus providing early evidence of fingerprint stability.


Historically, fingerprints had been used in ancient China and Babylon for sealing documents, but Herschel's work established a systematic approach to fingerprint identification within a modern administrative framework. His observations laid the groundwork for future researchers like Henry Faulds, Francis Galton, and Edward Henry, who advanced fingerprinting into a scientific method for criminal investigations and forensic identification.


India significantly contributed to the evolution of fingerprint science, with the Bengal Police developing a practical classification system in the 1890s that enabled efficient organization and retrieval of fingerprints. This system was later adopted by police forces worldwide. Today, in our technology-driven society, fingerprints are a cornerstone of biometric identification, utilized in law enforcement, border security, smartphones, and digital safety, evolving from a simple experiment to a global standard of identity.
