Taranjit Kaur Shines in ZEE5's Shabad Reet Aur Riwaz: A Deep Dive into Family Dynamics
Taranjit Kaur's Role in Shabad Reet Aur Riwaz
Theatre artist and actress Taranjit Kaur is currently featured in the ZEE5 series, Shabad Reet Aur Riwaz.
This series, set within a Punjabi family, delves into the emotional struggles that arise between a strict father, an ambitious teenage son, and a mother who strives to maintain family unity. Taranjit portrays the mother, a complex and resilient figure who serves as both the emotional and financial backbone of her household.
Reflecting on her initial response to the script, Taranjit reveals that director Manjot reached out to her for this project. “The narrative is deeply rooted in Punjab, which resonates with my own upbringing,” she explains.
Coming from a Punjabi background, she felt an immediate connection to the story. What captivated her the most was the strength embodied by the mother’s character. “She is both traditional and devout, yet incredibly strong. Mothers universally act as the stabilizing force, supporting their families while nurturing their children's aspirations,” she adds.
To prepare for her role, Taranjit drew upon her emotional memories. Having been involved in theatre since she was 15, she acknowledges her mother as a significant influence—calm, nurturing, and consistently supportive.
When asked to summarize the series, she states, “It encourages older generations to empathize with their children’s aspirations while urging younger generations to strike a balance between ambition and tradition.”
Trained by Neelam Mann Singh Chowdhury, Taranjit considers theatre her foundation. “It instilled discipline, provided me with essential tools, and honed a craft I continually revisit.” While theatre demands heightened energy for live audiences, she points out that digital performances require actors to embrace the principle of ‘less is more’; subtlety and restraint are key, yet the performances remain richly layered. Her career took a pivotal turn with the Oscar-winning German short film Raju. “It transformed my life,” she reflects, as it opened doors to significant cinematic opportunities.
Having also starred in films like Ankhon Dekhi and Airlift, she emphasizes that her primary criterion for selecting roles is their ability to excite her, focusing on the depth and variety of the characters.
Poetry serves as her voice and means of expression. “It enables me to reflect on women's experiences,” she concludes.
