Sonal Mansingh's Strong Reaction to Dance Performance

Prominent Bharatanatyam and Odissi dancer Sonal Mansingh has voiced her disapproval of Ananya Panday's Bharatanatyam fusion dance in the film Chand Mera Dil, labeling it as "absolute trash" and "unacceptable." A viral clip from the movie features Ananya's character performing Bharatanatyam while her co-star Lakshya looks on with admiration. Although the film aimed to present a contemporary interpretation, it has ignited a fierce discussion on social media, with users sharing memes and critiques.

Mansingh, a recipient of the Padma Vibhushan award, expressed her worries about the perceived decline in artistic standards within Hindi cinema. She remarked, "In our country, we are responsible for this, whether it’s a Hindi film or Bollywood. I recently watched a dance by Kamala Lakshman from Raj Kapoor's Chori Chori, and it was remarkable. Figures like Raj Kapoor used to invite skilled dancers for those so-called item numbers."

Dismissing the term "fusion" associated with the performance, she stated, "It is absolute trash. Such performances should not be allowed. If you want to perform, don’t label it Bharatanatyam. Just wear whatever you want and do as you please." Mansingh also expressed her appreciation for the backlash against the performance, saying, "I’m pleased to see the strong critique. It shows that people are becoming aware and are taking a stand. They are discussing it."

Chand Mera Dil premiered in theaters globally on May 22.
