Significance of Sawan Somwar: A Devotee's Guide to Worship
Understanding Sawan Somwar
Every Sawan Somwar: The second Monday of Sawan is on August 10th this year. During the month of Shravan, there are four Mondays dedicated to 'Sawan Somwar'. This day is particularly important for followers of Lord Shiva, who observe fasting and engage in various rituals. Devotees worship Mahadev, recite holy texts, chant mantras, and perform charitable acts. The *Shivling* is bathed with water in a ritual known as *Jalabhishek*, and *Rudrabhishek* is conducted to fulfill specific desires.
The Importance of Sawan Somwar
Why is Sawan Somwar significant?
The month of Sawan is cherished by Lord Shiva, and 'Somwar' translates to Monday, a day associated with the Moon (*Soma*). According to legend, the Moon God underwent severe penance to appease Mahadev when he suffered from a wasting disease. Shiva's grace relieved him, and he was honored by being placed on Shiva's head, earning the title 'Chandrashekhar'. This is why Mondays are dedicated to Shiva worship. Additionally, it is said that Goddess Parvati observed 16 Sawan Somwar fasts to win Lord Shiva as her husband.
Distinct Significance of Each Sawan Somwar
Does every Sawan Somwar have a distinct significance?
There are typically four Mondays in Sawan, and devotees fast and worship Shiva on each of these days. While the rituals are generally consistent, each Sawan Somwar is considered equally significant, aimed at seeking Shiva's blessings and fulfilling personal desires.
However, some individuals may place more emphasis on a particular Monday due to the *Tithi* (lunar day) and *Yoga* (astrological combination) present that day. For example, this year's second Sawan Somwar features seven auspicious combinations, coinciding with the *Som Pradosh Vrat*. Nevertheless, this does not diminish the importance of other Sawan Somwars, as each fast is believed to have the power to grant wishes.
