Significance of Devshayani Ekadashi: Rituals and Remedies
Understanding Devshayani Ekadashi
In Hindu tradition, there are 24 Ekadashis each year, with *Devshayani Ekadashi* being particularly important. This day marks the onset of *Chaturmas*, a period during which Lord Shri Hari Vishnu enters a state of *Yoganidra* (cosmic slumber) for four months. During this time, it is believed that auspicious events like weddings, housewarming ceremonies (*Griha Pravesh*), and tonsure ceremonies (*Mundan*) should not take place. Devotees are encouraged to worship Goddess Tulsi alongside Lord Vishnu on this day, as it is considered especially beneficial. Astrologer Pandit Anand Bhardwaj from Ujjain suggests that performing a specific remedy with the Tulsi plant on *Devshayani Ekadashi* can lead to happiness, prosperity, and financial success, along with the blessings of Lord Vishnu.
The Importance of Chaturmas
Following *Devshayani Ekadashi*, *Chaturmas* begins, during which Lord Vishnu remains in *Yoganidra*. Lord Shiva is believed to oversee the universe during these four months. This period also marks the start of the month of *Sawan*. During *Chaturmas*, activities like weddings are discouraged, while spiritual practices, fasting, and self-discipline are emphasized. This year, *Devshayani Ekadashi* is particularly auspicious due to the presence of favorable celestial alignments, including *Amrit Siddhi Yoga*, *Brahma Yoga*, and *Indra Yoga*.
When is Devshayani Ekadashi Observed?
According to the Vedic calendar, *Chaturmas* commences with *Devshayani Ekadashi*, which occurs during the *Shukla Paksha* (waxing phase of the moon) in the month of *Ashadha*. In 2026, this significant fast will be observed on Saturday, July 25. On this day, Lord Vishnu will enter *Yoganidra*, marking the start of *Chaturmas*, which will conclude with *Devutthana Ekadashi* during the *Shukla Paksha* of the *Kartik* month. This year, *Devutthana Ekadashi* is on November 20, 2026, meaning *Chaturmas* will last from July 25 to November 20, 2026.
