Shailene Woodley's Disappointment Over Cut Scenes

Shailene Woodley recently shared her experience of receiving an unexpected phone call informing her that her scenes as Mary Jane Watson were removed from the 2014 film 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2', despite having already filmed them alongside Andrew Garfield.

The two-time Golden Globe nominee revealed that she had filmed three scenes with Garfield, who portrayed Peter Parker, before being notified about the decision nearly a year later.

In a recent interview, Woodley described the moment as a surprising revelation, saying, "Oh, we shot it. That was a fun phone call."

She expressed that landing the role of Mary Jane was a significant milestone in her career, especially since Spider-Man was her favorite superhero and Mary Jane was her beloved character during her childhood.

Woodley recalled her excitement, stating, "I was cast as Mary Jane for Spider-Man, which was my dream. Oh my god, Spider-Man's my favorite superhero, Mary Jane was my favorite character growing up. So, when I got it, I was like, 'This is so exciting!'"

After filming three scenes with Garfield, she was shocked to learn that her character would not be included in the final cut of the movie.

She recounted, "And then, we filmed like three scenes together, me and Andrew Garfield. And then, like a year later, they were like, 'So, you're not in the movie anymore.' And I was like, 'What? What do you mean?'"

Woodley explained that the decision to cut her scenes was attributed to the introduction of numerous new characters in the film, as well as the storyline involving Garfield's Peter Parker and Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy.

She noted, "And they're like, 'We've introduced a lot of new characters in this last one, and we're going to wait for whatever happens between [Emma Stone] and Andrew [Garfield].'

Woodley added, "They were like, 'Let's wait for her to die, and then we'll introduce Mary Jane.' Which made sense, but then they didn't make that film. So, there was no reintroduction."

Despite the explanation she received, Woodley admitted she was unsure if it accurately represented the reasons behind her scenes being cut.

She remarked, "That's what I was told, but again, who knows what the truth is? I could have been terrible, and they were like, 'We can't do this.'"

Garfield's portrayal of Spider-Man later appeared alongside Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire in the 2021 film 'Spider-Man: No Way Home'.

However, Garfield has firmly stated that he will not reprise his role in 'Avengers: Doomsday', which is scheduled for release on December 18.

Nonetheless, he has not entirely dismissed the idea of returning to his version of Spider-Man in a different project.

Last year, he expressed his love for the character, stating he would be open to playing Spider-Man again, but would prefer a unique approach, saying, "I really love playing Spider-Man. I would love to play the character again in some capacity, but I think it would have to be very weird."
