Samrat Choudhary has been appointed as the new Chief Minister of Bihar, following his election as the leader of the BJP's Legislature Party in the state. This transition comes after the resignation of Nitish Kumar, who stepped down from his position on April 14, 2026. The inauguration ceremony for Choudhary and his Council of Ministers is set to take place on April 15 at 11 am at Raj Bhavan. Born on November 16, 1968, Samrat is the son of Shakuni Chaudhary, a six-time MLA from Tarapur and a former Lok Sabha MP. His mother, Parvati Devi, who passed away in 2022, also served as a legislator from Tarapur. Growing up in Lakhanpur village in the Munger district, he completed his early education there before pursuing higher studies at Madurai Kamaraj University. Choudhary belongs to the Koeri-Kushwaha community, which is recognized as the largest OBC group in Bihar after the Yadav community. With over thirty years of political experience, he has made a significant impact in the region.


Choudhary began his political journey in 1990 with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), a party led by former Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav. He is married to Mamta Kumari, and together they have two children: a son named Pranay Chaudhary and a daughter named Charu Priya. Mamta, a qualified lawyer, has been a crucial support throughout his political endeavors, actively participating in rallies and engaging with the community during election campaigns. She is also involved in various social initiatives. Additionally, Choudhary has four siblings, including his brother Rohit Choudhary, who joined the JD(U) in 2021.
