Exploring the Underworld: 'Police Company'

Renowned filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma is set to delve back into Mumbai's criminal underbelly with his latest project, Police Company. This T-Series-supported crime thriller features Harshvardhan Rane portraying the real-life encounter specialist Daya Nayak. The announcement was made on X, accompanied by a tagline that hints at the film's intensity: 'More dangerous than D Company.'

The narrative follows Nayak's evolution from a humble village in Mangalore to becoming a prominent figure in the Mumbai Police force, detailing his extensive three-decade career and participation in numerous underworld operations. Varma elaborated on the film's premise on X, stating, 'After DAWOOD IBRAHIM ruthlessly eliminated many rival gangs, he transformed his gang into a COMPANY and fled to DUBAI, leaving his protégé CHOTA RAJAN to oversee D COMPANY's operations.'

The rift between Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Rajan led to a significant power shift in Mumbai's underworld during the late 1990s, attracting gangs from various regions. In response, a specialized squad was established, which successfully took down over 300 gangsters from 1997 to 2004, with Nayak being one of its key operatives.

This film has been a long-standing ambition for Varma. His previous work, Ab Tak Chhappan, featuring Nana Patekar, was also inspired by Nayak's experiences. However, Police Company is being marketed as a comprehensive biopic rather than a loose adaptation. It is also seen as a revival of Varma's Company franchise, following the releases of Company in 2002 and D Company in 2021, although it does not share a storyline with those films.

Currently, pre-production is in progress, with filming set to commence in the third week of August. For Rane, who recently enjoyed success with Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat, this film adds to his busy schedule, which includes Milap Zaveri's Uniform, Omung Kumar's Silaa, and Force 3 alongside John Abraham.
