Promoting Grassroots Sports Development in India: Insights from Mary Kom and Bhaichung Bhutia
Emphasizing Grassroots and Reducing Screen Time
At the Khelo India Tribal Games 2026, six-time World Championship medallist Mary Kom and former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia highlighted the critical need for investment in grassroots sports and structured development pathways. They addressed the media on Friday, stressing that to nurture future champions, families should encourage children to spend less time on screens and more time engaging in various sports activities.
Bhutia on Building a Strong Foundation
Bhaichung Bhutia, a prominent figure in Indian football, emphasized that while events like the Khelo India Tribal Games serve as a solid foundation, the long-term success of sports in India relies on strengthening the underlying infrastructure. Reflecting on his own experiences, he noted the significant role of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in developing young athletes during a time when sports facilities were still being established. 'I was part of the first batch of SAI in 1986. We often neglect grassroots investment, focusing instead on elite levels,' Bhutia remarked, underscoring the necessity for ongoing support at the base of the sports hierarchy.
Discovering Untapped Talent in Tribal Areas
He also pointed out the abundant talent present in tribal regions, which requires the right environment to thrive. 'Tribal communities possess significant sporting potential, especially from the Northeast, where numerous athletes have excelled on the global stage. Providing young individuals with opportunities is crucial. I believe we will see an influx of talent from tribal backgrounds in the coming years,' he stated.
Influence of Environment and Culture
Bhutia shared insights on how one's environment and access to resources shape athletes, recalling his upbringing. 'In the Northeast, you typically engage in either football or music. That was my reality. In my childhood, football was the predominant sport in Sikkim, played in every village and town,' he explained.
Mary Kom Commends Khelo India Initiative
Mary Kom echoed Bhutia's sentiments, praising the Khelo India Tribal Games (KITG) as a groundbreaking initiative that addresses longstanding gaps in access and awareness. 'I want to commend the Chhattisgarh Government for launching the Khelo India Tribal Games here. I wholeheartedly support this initiative because our tribal communities have immense potential. In the past, they lacked platforms and awareness, which hindered many talented children from progressing,' said the 2012 London Olympics bronze medallist boxer.
Government Support and the Importance of Discipline
The celebrated boxer from Manipur also noted the transformative impact of government-supported programs. 'Thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Khelo India and Fit India initiatives, children are increasingly taking the initiative to participate and represent the country. This is a significant development for India's sporting future,' she remarked. Mary Kom emphasized that while opportunities have improved, discipline and perseverance are essential for success, urging young athletes to make the most of the support available.
