Nirjala Ekadashi 2026: Observance and Rituals Explained
Nirjala Ekadashi 2026: Fasting and Worship Practices
Nirjala Ekadashi 2026: Today, Thursday, June 25, marks the observance of the Nirjala Ekadashi fast. This significant fast is believed to cleanse sins and provide salvation, offering spiritual benefits equivalent to observing all 24 Ekadashi fasts throughout the year. Among the Pandavas, Bhimasena uniquely observed this fast, leading to its alternate name, Bhimaseni Ekadashi. The fast occurs on the *Ekadashi* (the eleventh day) of the waxing phase (*Shukla Paksha*) in the month of Jyeshtha. During this period, participants refrain from consuming food or water, although some suggest that milk and fruits may be allowed. What are the proper methods for observing the Nirjala Ekadashi fast? What rituals should be followed, and what are the auspicious timings (*Muhurat*) for worship and breaking the fast (*Paran*)?
Auspicious Timings for Nirjala Ekadashi 2026 (*Muhurat*):
Start of Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi Tithi: June 24, at 06:12 PM
End of Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi Tithi: June 25, at 08:09 PM
Nirjala Ekadashi Worship Timings: 05:25 AM to 07:10 AM; 10:39 AM to 02:09 PM.

Nirjala Ekadashi 2026: Five Auspicious Confluences
On the day of Nirjala Ekadashi, five auspicious confluences (*Yogas*) occur. This day also celebrates Gayatri Jayanti and falls on a Thursday, which is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Additionally, Ravi Yoga, Shiva Yoga, and Siddha Yoga are present.
Gayatri Jayanti
Day: Thursday
Ravi Yoga: From 05:25 AM to 04:29 PM
Shiva Yoga: From early morning until 10:54 AM
Siddha Yoga: From 10:54 AM until 11:39 AM (the following day)
What are the rules for observing the Nirjala Ekadashi Fast? A fundamental rule is the complete abstention from food and water. Even the water used for *Achaman* (purification ritual) during worship should not be swallowed. Observers must maintain this fast from sunrise on Nirjala Ekadashi until the following day's sunrise (*Paran* day).
Some individuals believe that consuming fruits (*Phalahar*) and milk is permissible during Nirjala Ekadashi. However, according to the legend, Sage Vyasa instructed Bhimasena that only those who fast *Nirjala*—without water—will gain the spiritual rewards of all twenty-four Ekadashi fasts and achieve *Moksha* (salvation). Drinking water, even inadvertently, invalidates the fast.
While you may choose to consume fruits during Nirjala Ekadashi, the spiritual benefits associated with this specific fast will not be attained.
Nirjala Ekadashi Fast and Worship Rituals
On Nirjala Ekadashi, rise during *Brahma Muhurta* (between 04:05 AM and 04:45 AM) and perform your morning rituals. Dress in clean attire and tidy the worship area.
In the morning, hold water and flowers, making a solemn vow (*Sankalp*) to observe the Nirjala Ekadashi fast and worship Lord Vishnu. Conduct the worship during the auspicious *Muhurta* and *Ravi Yoga*.
Begin by laying a yellow cloth on a wooden platform (*Chauki*) and adorning it with flowers and garlands. Place the idol or image of Lord Vishnu on it.
Next, bathe Lord Vishnu with *Panchamrit*. Offer yellow flowers, *Akshat* (unbroken rice), sandalwood paste, turmeric, Tulsi leaves, incense, a lamp, fruits, betel leaves, betel nuts, and garments.
Recite the *Vishnu Sahasranama* and *Vishnu Chalisa*, and listen to the Nirjala Ekadashi fast legend (*Vrat Katha*).
Afterward, perform *Aarti* with a camphor or ghee lamp. Once the worship concludes, fill an earthen pot with clean water and donate it.
Maintain the fast throughout the day, dedicating your time to devotion and *Bhajans* (devotional songs). Light a lamp during *Pradosh Kaal* (the period around sunset) and worship Lord Vishnu. Finally, observe a *Jagran* (night-long vigil). The following morning, complete your bath and daily rituals.
Donate items such as clothing, food grains, water, and fruits as per your ability. Conclude the fast by consuming a Tulsi leaf along with Gangajal (water from the Ganges) or other holy water. Pray to Shri Hari to fulfill your wishes.
