New Virus Emerges in Bangladesh: A Growing Health Concern
Emergence of a New Virus in Bangladesh
In Bangladesh, the ongoing political turmoil is compounded by the emergence of a new virus that poses a significant health threat. Researchers have identified this virus, which is as lethal as the Nipah virus, and initially believed to be a variant of it. Recent studies have confirmed that it is actually the 'Pteropine orthoreovirus' (PRV), a pathogen that has transitioned from bats to humans, raising alarm among health professionals. The consumption of raw date palm sap has been linked to infections, heightening concerns within the medical community.
Is PRV More Dangerous Than Nipah?
Is this new virus more dangerous than Nipah?
Between December 2022 and March 2023, five individuals were hospitalized in Bangladesh, all presenting severe symptoms including fever, vomiting, intense headaches, and fatigue. Notably, these patients exhibited excessive salivation and neurological issues. Each had consumed raw date palm sap, a beverage also favored by bats. However, tests for Nipah returned negative, prompting scientists to investigate further and identify this new virus.
Even after their hospital discharge, the patients continued to experience health issues. Three individuals reported ongoing fatigue, breathing difficulties, and mobility challenges. Tragically, one patient succumbed in 2024, with doctors unable to determine the cause of his deteriorating mental health. Researchers noted that this virus has also been detected in Malaysia and Vietnam, where symptoms were less severe, unlike the aggressive manifestations observed in Bangladesh, which include direct attacks on the lungs and brain.
Virus Mutation Raises Concerns
Increased threat due to virus mutation?
Experts suspect that the virus has undergone genetic mutations, enhancing its transmissibility and deadliness. A similar strain has been found in bats near the Padma River. Scientists now believe that this virus has evolved from a mild infection to a serious health threat. Dr. Nishchay Mishra emphasized that merely avoiding Nipah is insufficient; the risks associated with consuming raw date palm sap have significantly increased.
Preventive Measures Against PRV
How to protect yourself from this deadly infection?
This situation serves as a critical warning for residents in the Padma River basin. Health experts advise that any respiratory illness should be taken seriously. It is now essential to include testing for the ‘PRV’ virus alongside Nipah in medical assessments. Consuming date palm sap without boiling it can be life-threatening. The safest approach is to avoid any food that may have been in contact with bats. Surveillance programs have been intensified to curb the spread of this virus.
