K. Annamalai's Departure from BJP


K. Annamalai, the former president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu, has announced his resignation from the party. An IPS officer from the Karnataka cadre, he joined the BJP in August 2020 and took charge of its Tamil Nadu unit. His tenure as state president lasted from July 16, 2021, until April 11, 2025.


Annamalai holds a mechanical engineering degree from a college in Coimbatore and an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow. He successfully cleared the Civil Services Examination in 2011, subsequently joining the Indian Police Service (IPS), where he gained recognition for his strong administrative skills and led significant operations against crime. He left the IPS in 2019.


Originating from the Kongu region of Tamil Nadu, specifically Karur district, Annamalai comes from a farming family within the prominent Gounder community and does not have a political background. Born on June 4, 1984, to Kuppusamy and Parameshwari, his father is a farmer in Thottampatti village. Annamalai is married to Akhila Swaminathan, a corporate professional and director at Core Talent and Leadership Development. The couple, who wed in 2013, has a son together. Annamalai prefers to maintain a low profile, and his wife has largely stayed out of the public eye. He frequently visits his family farm to spend time with his parents.


He is known for his close relationship with his family, often prioritizing their needs over political commitments. For example, he stepped back from campaigning in certain areas to support his father during medical treatments in Coimbatore. In a statement to reporters, he expressed, “I want to be with my father, who is undergoing treatment in Coimbatore. I have conveyed my decision to state president Nainar Nagenthran.”


Annamalai leads a disciplined lifestyle, incorporating daily running and yoga into his routine. He is proficient in Tamil, English, Kannada, and Hindi.
