A Journey of Resilience and Triumph

Inunganbi Takhellambam from Manipur has achieved what India has been waiting for over 13 years by winning a bronze medal at the Asian Judo Championship. Despite facing numerous injuries and undergoing two knee surgeries, her determination has finally paid off. This victory not only marks a significant milestone in her career but also makes her the first Indian to win a medal at this level since Angom Anita Chanu. Her story is one of perseverance, patience, and unwavering faith.

A Historic Moment and a Promise Fulfilled

During the bronze medal match against Mongolia's Lkhavadulam Sarantsetseg, Inunganbi focused solely on her performance. However, the true significance of her victory became clear afterward. Her coach, Angom Anita Chanu, had carried a blazer to tournaments for years, meant to be worn only during medal matches, but had never had the chance to wear it. This time, Inunganbi insisted that her coach would finally don the blazer, which made its appearance after 13 long years.

Overcoming Challenges

Inunganbi's path was fraught with challenges. She faced defeat in the quarter-finals against Uzbekistan's Shirinjon Yuldosheva, which nearly ended her journey. However, when Yuldosheva advanced to the finals, it opened the door for Inunganbi to compete in the repechage round. Seizing this second chance, she fought her way to the bronze medal match.

Reflecting on her experience, Inunganbi stated, 'When I entered the bronze medal match, I told myself this is a huge opportunity.' Coming from Manipur, a state known for producing sports legends like Kunjarani Devi and Mary Kom, she, like many young athletes from her region, tried various sports before finding her passion in judo.

A Career Reshaped by Adversity

Inunganbi's career took a hit in 2018 due to a severe knee injury, requiring surgery and a year-long recovery. She recalled, 'The first time I got injured, my body felt completely weak.' In 2024, she faced another injury to the same knee, but this time her comeback was stronger and faster.

Since joining the senior Indian team in 2021, she struggled to progress past the first round. This medal represents a significant turning point for her. 'This victory will boost my confidence,' she remarked, with her sights now set on the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. However, she acknowledges the need for continued hard work to maintain consistent performance at the international level.

A Symbol of Hope for Indian Judo

Inunganbi noted, 'Two other players from our team also reached the bronze medal matches but did not win medals. If we receive more international exposure and training camps, we can perform even better.' It is fair to say that her medal is not just a personal achievement but also a beacon of hope for Indian judo. The blazer that had long remained in her coach's bag now symbolizes a new beginning and renewed faith.

India's journey in the Uber Cup came to an end with a loss to China. PV Sindhu's efforts were not enough to secure a victory for the team.
