Understanding the Safe Use of Period Panties: Expert Insights
The Rise of Period Panties
Period panties have gained popularity as a reusable menstrual option due to their comfort, practicality, and eco-friendly nature. Following the recent certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for reusable menstrual products, interest in these underwear is surging. However, a common question arises: Is it safe to wear period panties for 10 to 12 hours? Gynecologists indicate that the answer varies based on individual menstrual flow, hygiene habits, and the specific usage of the product. Experts caution that while these reusable panties are generally safe, wearing them for extended periods, particularly during moderate to heavy flow days, could heighten the risk of skin irritation, unpleasant odors, and even vaginal infections.
Are Period Panties Suitable for All-Day Use?
Deepa Vari, the Founder and Managing Director of Adira, explains that period panties are intended as supplementary protection to prevent leaks when using pads, tampons, or menstrual cups, rather than as a standalone solution. A 2023 study published in BMJ Sexual and Reproductive Health revealed that period underwear has an average absorbency of approximately 2 mL of menstrual blood, making it the least absorbent option among those evaluated. Vari emphasizes that menstrual blood differs from water used in older absorbency tests, and prolonged contact with the skin could disrupt the vaginal microbiome, increasing the risk of bacterial vaginosis, irritation, and odor.
Risks of Extended Wear
Dr. Aishwarya Karthik Nagesh, an Associate Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Aster RV Hospital in Bengaluru, highlights a common misconception: that reusable menstrual products remain hygienic simply because they can be washed. The safety of these products largely depends on their usage, washing, drying, and storage practices. Wearing period panties for long durations can lead to blood, sweat, and moisture being trapped against the skin, which raises the likelihood of irritation, chafing, rashes, and infections. She also stresses the importance of selecting the appropriate absorbency level based on menstrual flow.
Can Period Panties Lead to Infections?
Dr. Smita Kalappa, a gynecologist at Apollo Clinic in JP Nagar, notes that while breathable materials like cotton and bamboo can help maintain skin dryness, hygiene is crucial. If period underwear is not changed regularly, washed correctly, or worn beyond the recommended time, moisture buildup can foster bacterial growth, leading to irritation, odor, skin damage, and vaginal infections. Dr. Kalappa advises that period panties are effective for light to moderate menstrual flow and can be used in conjunction with pads, tampons, or menstrual cups for added protection.
Recommended Duration for Wearing Period Panties
Dr. Thejaswini J, a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist at Motherhood Hospitals in Electronic City, Bengaluru, cautions that although manufacturers suggest wear times of 8 to 12 hours, this should not be seen as a universal guideline. The absorbent fabric can retain heat and moisture, and prolonged exposure to menstrual blood can alter the natural vaginal pH, facilitating the growth of bacteria and yeast, which increases the risk of bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections. She warns that remaining in damp fabric for extended periods may also result in contact dermatitis, itching, and painful vulval irritation.
Safe Practices for Using Period Panties
Gynecologists recommend the following best practices:
- Select the appropriate absorbency level for your menstrual flow.
- Change period panties more frequently during heavy-flow days.
- Wash them immediately after use according to the manufacturer's guidelines.
- Ensure they are completely dry before reuse.
- Store them in a clean, dry environment.
If you experience persistent itching, foul-smelling discharge, rashes, or irritation, seek medical advice. Period panties can be a convenient and eco-friendly menstrual product when used correctly. However, experts advise against wearing them continuously for long hours during heavy bleeding or without proper hygiene. The best approach is to align the product with your menstrual flow, change it as necessary, and adhere to proper washing and drying practices to safeguard your vaginal health and minimize infection risks.
