Increasing Stroke Cases in India

In recent years, the incidence of brain strokes in India has been on the rise. Following a stroke, patients require careful monitoring of their health for several months. Rehabilitation plays a crucial role in this recovery process. Experts emphasize the importance of having a proper recovery plan post-stroke, which includes medication, physiotherapy, and consistent follow-ups.

Importance of a Recovery Plan

Experts highlight that after receiving appropriate treatment, patients must not become complacent once discharged from the hospital. A well-structured recovery plan is essential to prevent any potential health issues. Patients should be informed about the timing of therapies, the medications they need to take, and the duration of rehabilitation.

The Golden Period of Recovery

Dr. Gaurav Thukral, President of HCAH, explains that the initial weeks following a stroke are critical. During this time, the brain is in a state of neuroplasticity, allowing it to reorganize itself. The recovery phase has a 'golden period' lasting from 6 to 12 weeks post-stroke. Adequate care, exercise, and rehabilitation during this timeframe can significantly enhance recovery, yet many individuals neglect rehabilitation after a stroke.

Need for Enhanced Rehabilitation Services

According to Dr. Gaurav, there is a pressing need to expand rehabilitation services in the country. Currently, there are only about 1,200 stroke rehabilitation centers, which is insufficient given the population size. Increasing the number of these centers will aid patients in their recovery journey after a stroke.

Steps to Take for Post-Stroke Recovery

The recovery period begins after stroke treatment. It is crucial to follow the exercises and physiotherapy routines prescribed by your doctor. If a patient experiences difficulties with speech or eating, consulting an ENT specialist is advisable. Timely medication as prescribed by the doctor and regular check-ups are essential for a successful recovery.
