A New Era in Math Learning
In 2019, the film Super 30 captivated audiences with the remarkable journey of a teacher who empowered underprivileged students to conquer one of India's most challenging exams. For Anand Kumar, however, this cinematic portrayal was just the beginning of a larger mission.Today, the mathematician and educator is embarking on an even more ambitious project aimed at revolutionizing math education globally.
His latest initiative, Super Infinity, is a free learning platform on YouTube that replaces traditional rote learning with engaging storytelling, music, drama, animation, and real-world applications. The core idea is refreshingly simple: make math enjoyable.
“Let’s have fun with numbers. The competition will take care of itself,” Kumar asserts confidently. This philosophy directly challenges the prevalent culture in India that prioritizes exam scores. Rather than instilling a fear of mathematics, Kumar aims to foster a love for the subject. He believes that when students grasp concepts and find learning enjoyable, success in competitive exams will naturally follow.
Since its launch a month ago, Super Infinity has attracted over 300,000 subscribers, appealing to viewers not only in India but also in countries like Japan, the US, the UK, Germany, South Korea, Canada, and Australia.
For Kumar, this platform represents the culmination of a long journey. He gained national recognition in 2002 when he founded Super 30 in Patna, Bihar, where he coached talented students from underprivileged backgrounds for the IIT entrance exams.
The success of Super 30, which inspired a film starring Hrithik Roshan and directed by Vikas Bahl, turned Kumar into a household name. Despite the film's acclaim, he continued to seek innovative ways to make mathematics more accessible, leading to the creation of Super Infinity. “For six years, we dedicated ourselves to reimagining how math could be taught online,” Kumar explains. “Our aim was not to produce just another online course, but to create a completely new learning experience.”
Unlike traditional coaching platforms, Super Infinity employs cinematic storytelling and visual narratives to clarify complex mathematical ideas. A challenging theorem might be illustrated through an animated tale, while a difficult algebraic concept could be introduced via music or relatable scenarios. The goal is not just to solve problems but to understand the underlying principles.
The platform is designed for everyone—from schoolchildren encountering math for the first time to students preparing for IIT-JEE, Olympiads, and other competitive tests. However, Kumar emphasizes that the exams themselves are not the primary focus. “If students grasp mathematics thoroughly, the exams become significantly easier,” he notes.
Like Super 30, this platform is entirely free. Kumar has invested years of personal resources into its development because he believes that access to quality education should not be determined by a student’s financial situation.
