From Routine Ride to Medical Emergency

The young man was riding his motorcycle when he collided head-on with an auto-rickshaw, resulting in catastrophic injuries to his left hand. Three fingers were almost completely amputated, remaining attached only by a thin strip of skin, while the fourth finger sustained multiple fractures. He was quickly taken to a nearby medical facility for emergency stabilization but was later referred to Manipal Hospital due to the complexity of his injuries, arriving nearly four hours post-accident—a critical timeframe for limb preservation.

Understanding the urgency of the situation, Dr. Kartik Shrinivas Tallam, a Senior Consultant in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and his team promptly moved the patient to the operating room. The overnight surgery, conducted under an operating microscope, involved meticulous repair of damaged arteries, veins, tendons, nerves, and soft tissues, along with stabilizing fractured bones using K-wires. Unlike fingertip injuries, this trauma occurred at the base of the fingers, complicating the reconstruction process significantly.
