Maharashtra FDA Issues Warning Over Toxic Skin-Lightening Creams
Serious Health Risks Linked to Goree Beauty Cream
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of Maharashtra has raised a significant public health alert after laboratory analyses revealed alarmingly high concentrations of mercury and lead in a skin-lightening product from Pakistan, known as Goree Beauty Cream. The agency has classified these products as "Not of Standard Quality" (NSQ), cautioning that extended usage could lead to severe health issues, including kidney damage, nervous system disorders, and skin toxicity. This action was prompted by concerning reports from Nagpur, where medical professionals identified 18 women suffering from kidney ailments over two years, all of whom had a common link: the use of Goree Beauty Cream.
Mercury Levels Exceed Legal Limits
The situation gained traction after entrepreneur Chirag Barjatya shared findings on social media, revealing that Goree Beauty Cream contained mercury levels exceeding the legal limit by 752 times. He noted, “This mercury (toxic in this case) can make you appear fair in just 15 days by blocking melanin production. However, this is merely chemical damage that mimics fairness. Moreover, our skin absorbs mercury, which continuously deposits in the kidneys,” he stated on X.
In response, authorities have mandated that retailers, wholesalers, distributors, and online platforms cease the sale of these products and withdraw them from the market.

Why Mercury is Used in Skin-Lightening Products
Experts indicate that some illicit skin-whitening creams incorporate mercury due to its ability to inhibit melanin production, resulting in lighter skin within a few days. However, dermatologists caution that this whitening effect is not indicative of healthy skin but rather a consequence of chemical toxicity. Mercury can penetrate the skin during regular application, accumulating over time, particularly in the kidneys, leading to irreversible harm.
Health Implications of Mercury Exposure
Long-term exposure to mercury through cosmetics can adversely affect various organs. Medical professionals highlight potential health complications, including:
- Kidney damage and failure
- Protein leakage in urine
- Nervous system disorders
- Memory and concentration issues
- Tremors and numbness
- Skin rashes and discoloration
- High blood pressure
- Fatigue and weakness
As mercury accumulates gradually, symptoms may develop slowly and often go unnoticed until significant damage has occurred.
Research Links Fairness Creams to Kidney Disease
Growing medical evidence supports these concerns. A 2024 study published in Kidney International established a strong correlation between the prolonged use of mercury-laden skin-lightening creams and Membranous Nephropathy (MN), a severe kidney condition that damages the kidneys' filtering units and leads to excessive protein leakage into urine. Researchers examined 22 patients diagnosed with MN between 2021 and 2023 and found that many had a history of using mercury-infused fairness creams. The study concluded that mercury absorbed through the skin can accumulate in kidney tissue, significantly heightening the risk of long-term kidney damage. Maharashtra's regulatory measures align with similar international warnings.
Protecting Yourself from Harmful Products
Health professionals advise against using skin-lightening products that promise quick results. Before purchasing cosmetics, consider the following:
- Only buy products approved by licensed authorities.
- Carefully read ingredient labels.
- Avoid products with vague manufacturing details.
- Discontinue use of any cream if you experience skin irritation or unusual symptoms.
- Seek medical help if you notice swelling, reduced urination, or persistent fatigue after prolonged use of cosmetics.
This warning serves as a crucial reminder that beauty products can pose significant health risks when they contain toxic heavy metals. Opting for safe, regulated cosmetics can help safeguard not only your skin but also your kidneys and overall well-being.
