India Approves First Dengue Vaccine QDENGA for Ages 4 to 60

In a significant advancement for public health, India has granted approval for its inaugural dengue vaccine, QDENGA, aimed at individuals aged between 4 and 60 years. This vaccine has been authorized by the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) in accordance with the New Drugs and Clinical Trials (NDCT) Rules, 2019. It is anticipated to bolster the nation's efforts against dengue, a disease transmitted by mosquitoes that impacts millions of people in India annually. Developed by the Japanese pharmaceutical firm Takeda, QDENGA is the first dengue vaccine to receive approval in India and is formulated to provide protection against all four serotypes of the dengue virus: DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4. Notably, it can be administered without the need for prior blood tests to check for previous dengue infections.


Understanding QDENGA

What is QDENGA?


QDENGA is a live-attenuated tetravalent vaccine that prepares the immune system to identify and combat all four strains of the dengue virus. The vaccination process involves two doses of 0.5 mL administered via subcutaneous injections, spaced three months apart. Given that all four dengue virus serotypes are prevalent in India, immunity against each strain is crucial to mitigate the risk of severe dengue and hospital admissions.

Why is this approval important?


India accounts for nearly one-third of the global dengue burden. Although over 113,000 dengue cases were officially documented in 2025, experts estimate that the actual number of infections could reach tens of millions each year, as many cases go undiagnosed or unreported. Factors such as rapid urbanization, climate change, stagnant water, and increased mosquito breeding have turned dengue into a persistent public health issue in various regions of the country. Unlike many viral diseases, there is no specific antiviral treatment available for dengue; medical care primarily focuses on hydration, managing symptoms, and preventing complications.


Clinical Trial Results

Clinical trials show strong protection


The approval from DCGI is backed by Takeda's comprehensive global clinical development program, which involved over 28,000 participants across 19 Phase I, II, and III clinical trials. Key outcomes include:


  • 80.2% efficacy against laboratory-confirmed dengue one year post-second dose
  • 90.4% efficacy against dengue-related hospitalizations after 18 months
  • 84.1% protection against hospitalization sustained for 4.5 years
  • Safety and effectiveness maintained for up to seven years



A Phase III clinical trial conducted in India also confirmed that the vaccine is safe, well-tolerated, and capable of eliciting a robust immune response in children, adolescents, and adults aged 4-60 years. QDENGA has received prequalification from the World Health Organization (WHO) and is recommended for use in regions where dengue is endemic, without the need for prior screening for past dengue infections. The vaccine has already been approved in 43 countries, with over 32 million doses distributed globally. It is also part of Brazil's National Immunization Program and is accessible through public vaccination initiatives in countries such as Argentina, Colombia, and Indonesia.
