Nourishing Choices for Devotees During Chaitra Navratri

Chaitra Navratri, which began earlier this week, sees many devotees undertaking fasting as they maintain a pure mindset and seek blessings. Typically, these fasts involve a sattvik diet that excludes grains like wheat, rice, and flour, as well as legumes, lentils, onions, garlic, and even regular salt. To assist those observing the fast, renowned nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar has shared several 'superfoods' that can enhance both the taste and nutritional value of meals during this period. She notes, "As we transition from winter to spring, we should embrace the vibrant colors and fragrances of the season in our meals. Food connects us to the universe, fostering peace and joy."

Dry Fruits

Diwekar recommends consuming a handful of dry fruits daily, each offering unique benefits: cashews soothe nerves, almonds are great for skin health, walnuts help regulate hormones, and pistachios are beneficial for eye health.

Rajgeera

This superfood has multiple benefits, including aiding digestion, enhancing bone density, and providing sustained energy.

Yams

Diwekar suggests various starchy root vegetables such as yams, suran, arbi, ratalu, and konfal, which support immunity and fertility, and can also alleviate hot flashes.

Fresh Fruit Drinks

These beverages are packed with antioxidants, helping to reduce stress and keep the body hydrated while preventing heat exhaustion.

Neem Chutney

Described as a natural detox, neem chutney is also an excellent immunity booster.

Milk and Curd

Dairy products are beneficial for the gut, heart, and brain, especially during fasting periods.

Aamer Dal

This dish, made from red masur lentils cooked with raw mangoes, turmeric, and salt, is rich in fiber and minerals. For those adhering strictly to a sattvik diet, fresh raw mangoes can be enjoyed directly from the harvest.
