Celebrating International Yoga Day

Since 2015, June 21 has been recognized globally as International Yoga Day, encouraging individuals of all ages to engage in this ancient Indian practice that promotes both physical and mental health. This year’s theme, "Yoga for Healthy Ageing," is particularly significant for India, where the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) forecasts that the elderly demographic will reach approximately 347 million by 2050. This highlights the urgent need for strategies that support healthy ageing. Beyond enhancing flexibility and fitness, yoga is increasingly recognized as an effective means to foster social connections and alleviate feelings of loneliness among seniors.


Fostering Health and Community Through Yoga

Yoga communities across India are playing a vital role in keeping older adults active, socially engaged, and connected. Gyanesh Sharma, a retired accountant who began his yoga practice in 2004, exemplifies this trend. Initially practicing alone, he transitioned to group sessions in public parks at dawn. After years of self-study and practice, he gained the confidence to teach yoga to diverse age groups. Now at 70, Sharma conducts morning and evening classes for about 25 participants, sharing that yoga has profoundly transformed his life. He states, "Yoga serves as a powerful remedy for both physical and mental ailments," and credits it with providing him recognition, purpose, peace, and fulfillment.


Yoga as a Remedy for Loneliness

For 75-year-old Rastogi, yoga transcends mere wellness; it has become a vital part of his life. A former employee of the Prime Minister's Office, he has been practicing and teaching yoga since his retirement in 2011. Leading a group of 40 to 50 participants in Greater Noida, Rastogi believes that yoga fosters essential social connections. He remarks, "Yoga cultivates communities and relationships that are crucial in today’s fast-paced society." Many seniors practicing yoga share that it helps them manage feelings of loneliness, particularly as their children relocate for education or job opportunities.


Building Meaningful Connections

In South Delhi, instructor Sayema Sahar conducts classes for around 20 elderly participants, emphasizing the importance of friendship and emotional support within these sessions. She explains, "Yoga classes, workshops, and retreats unite individuals with shared wellness aspirations, fostering meaningful friendships." Sahar notes that such environments enhance social cohesion, as individuals become more comfortable and authentic, leading to deeper connections.


Addressing Loneliness Through Yoga

Loneliness is increasingly acknowledged as a significant public health issue. The World Health Organization (WHO) has consistently pointed out the health risks linked to social isolation, especially among older adults. As India braces for a rapidly ageing population, yoga communities are proving to be more than just spaces for physical activity. They provide elderly individuals with opportunities for movement, companionship, emotional health, and a renewed sense of belonging.
