Critical Condition of Nipah Patient in Kerala: Health Department Issues Contact Tracing Map
Current Status of the Nipah Patient
A 43-year-old patient diagnosed with Nipah virus in Kozhikode, Kerala, remains in a critical state and is currently reliant on ventilator support within an isolation unit. The Health Department has released a detailed route map of the patient's movements from May 30 to June 10 to assist in contact tracing efforts. So far, 77 individuals have been identified as contacts, including 58 healthcare professionals, 14 family members, and five friends and colleagues. Fortunately, none of these contacts have exhibited symptoms to date. Among those listed, two individuals are categorized as highest risk, 13 as high risk, and 62 as low risk. All individuals in the highest and high-risk categories have been placed under quarantine.
Health Minister K Muraleedharan reassured the public that there is no cause for alarm despite the patient's extensive interactions. The patient had visited various departments in a private hospital for treatment prior to being diagnosed. Hospital staff who interacted with him have also been advised to quarantine. Initial reports indicate that the patient was admitted with fever and related symptoms, and subsequent tests for the Nipah virus were conducted after he exhibited signs of encephalitis.
Understanding Nipah Virus
What Is Nipah Virus?
Nipah virus (NiV) is a highly infectious and potentially deadly viral illness that can be transmitted from animals to humans and, in certain cases, between people. This virus is notorious for causing severe respiratory issues and encephalitis, which is an inflammation of the brain. Health experts note that the mortality rate for Nipah virus can range from 40% to 75%, highlighting the importance of early detection and containment measures.
