The Rise of Harnoor Randhawa in Punjabi Music

One of the standout tracks in Diljit Dosanjh’s recent musical journey is 'Jeona Morh,' showcasing the artist's signature vocals intertwined with the rich storytelling of Punjab's folk traditions. The success of this track is attributed to the unwavering commitment and hard work of many contributors, particularly lyricist Harnoor Randhawa.

Originating from Patiala, Harnoor immersed himself in the realms of Punjabi Sufi and literary heritage for many years. Influenced by iconic figures like Shiv Kumar Batalvi, Sahir Ludhianvi, Bulleh Shah, Kabir, and Sheikh Farid, he cultivated a writing style that merges poetic fervor with spiritual insight.

Harnoor embarked on his professional songwriting career in 2016, facing years filled with uncertainty and quiet determination.

Throughout his journey, he explored various themes, including the struggles of farmers, Sufi teachings, devotion to Gurus, and the intricacies of human emotions. Despite his efforts, he yearned for a song that would achieve commercial success while retaining its genuine Punjabi essence. At one point, feeling disheartened by the slow recognition, he contemplated abandoning his craft. However, a pivotal call from Diljit Dosanjh’s team in 2023 changed everything. Collaborating with the superstar on this track marked a significant turning point in his career, elevating his presence in the Punjabi music scene.

Reflecting on his journey, Randhawa shares, “It has been a long struggle to bring authentic Punjabi music into the mainstream, unrefined and uncompromised. Diljit Dosanjh’s voice transcends borders, and Tru-Skool ensures the sound remains genuine.”

Harnoor first gained notable recognition with 'Ikk Jogi,' performed by Kanwar Grewal, which won the PTC Punjabi Best Sufi Song Award in 2020 and resonated with Punjabi audiences globally. He further solidified his reputation through the successful project 'Jagey Rehen Jogi,' where he penned all five tracks — 'Shiva,' 'Zamaane,' 'Mehboob,' 'Yaar Madina,' and 'Pardesiya.'

His expanding portfolio includes collaborations with artists like Charanjit Ahuja, Harshdeep Kaur, Nooran Sisters, Afsana Khan, and Bir Singh, along with projects such as 'Junior Princess of God,' 'Chamak,' and 'Lazeez.' Additionally, he has authored two poetry collections, 'Qissa-Ae-Noor' and 'Meru Manka.' Although he resides in Canada, the essence of Punjab continues to inspire him, and he hopes to strengthen that connection over time.

For aspiring artists striving to keep their creative spirit alive, Harnoor offers a heartfelt reminder: “Never stop working and never stop dreaming. The universe has its own mysterious way of opening doors and connecting the dots when the time is right.”
