Religious texts indicate that there are four Navratris throughout the year. Among these, Chaitra and Sharadiya Navratri are widely recognized, while the other two are referred to as Gupt Navratri (Secret Navratri). Worship during this time is believed to be highly rewarding, bestowing devotees with strength, Siddhis (spiritual abilities), and tranquility.

Auspicious Timing for Gupt Navratri

As per Acharya Anand Bhardwaj from Ujjain, it is said that during Navratri, the Mother Goddess descends to Earth to fulfill the desires of her followers. This year, her arrival is particularly auspicious as she is believed to come riding on an elephant, a symbol of good fortune. Now, let’s explore the start date of this Magha month's Navratri and the favorable time for Ghatasthapana (Kalash Sthapana).

When does Magha Gupt Navratri 2026 commence?
According to the Vedic calendar, Gupt Navratri begins on the Pratipada Tithi (first day) of the Shukla Paksha (bright half) of the Magha month. This Tithi starts around 01:21 AM on Monday, January 19, 2026, and concludes around 02:14 AM on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. Therefore, based on Udayatithi (sunrise), Magha Gupt Navratri will officially start on January 19, 2026.

Auspicious Timing for Ghatasthapana

What is the favorable time for Ghatasthapana?
Ghatasthapana (Kalash Sthapana) holds special significance on the inaugural day of Navratri. This year, there are two auspicious windows for performing Kalash Sthapana. The first auspicious period is from 7:13 AM to 10:49 AM, lasting approximately 3 hours and 36 minutes. Additionally, the Abhijit Muhurta will occur from 12:15 PM to 12:58 PM. If the morning auspicious time is missed, performing the installation during the Abhijit Muhurta is also considered highly beneficial.

Significance of the Mother Goddess's Mount

What are the implications of the Mother Goddess's mount?
This year, Magha Navratri begins on a Monday, and the Mother Goddess's vehicle is an elephant. The symbolism of the Goddess arriving on an elephant indicates the promise of plentiful rainfall. Tradition holds that if Navratri starts on a Monday or Sunday, Goddess Durga's mount is an elephant, which foretells heavy rains.
