Efforts to Secure Geographical Indication for 'Palua Ladu'

Bhadrak: The local government in Bhadrak, Odisha, has begun efforts to obtain a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for 'Palua Ladu', a beloved traditional sweet known for its unique taste and artisanal crafting.

This initiative follows a directive from District Collector Dilip Routray, who has urged all department heads, tehsildars, and block development officers to incorporate 'Palua Ladu' into hospitality packages for official gatherings and events.

Routray emphasized, "Acquiring the GI tag will help preserve the cultural and historical significance of 'Palua Ladu', while also giving Bhadrak a distinctive identity."

He added that this move would enhance the local economy, support regional sweet makers, and promote Odisha's rich cultural heritage on an international stage.

'Palua Ladu' is highly regarded throughout Odisha and beyond for its delectable flavor and traditional preparation methods, which utilize simple, time-honored ingredients such as 'palua' (arrowroot powder), semolina, and sugar.

The push for a GI tag is viewed as a strategic measure to maintain its authenticity, deter imitation, and elevate the skills of Bhadrak's confectioners, according to an official.

The district administration is collaborating with local sweet artisans and cultural organizations to gather the necessary historical and technical documentation for the GI tag application.

If successful, 'Palua Ladu' will join the ranks of other GI-tagged specialties from Odisha, such as 'Rasagola' and 'Kandhamal Haldi', the official noted.
