Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion across the country every year. Preparations for the festival start well in advance, with devotees getting ready to welcome Lord Ganesh into their homes. From selecting the idol to cleaning and decorating the space, every detail is meticulously planned. The festival involves ten days of worship and ends with the immersion of the idol on the tenth day.

This year, Ganesh Chaturthi falls on September 7th. The festival is marked by various religious activities and rituals, including the installation of Lord Ganesh’s idol and the preparation of a variety of dishes and sweets as offerings. One traditional and delicious offering you can prepare at home is Shrikhand. Here’s how you can make this delightful dessert.

Ingredients

  • 1 kg fresh thick curd (yogurt), not too sour
  • Powdered sugar, to taste
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon black cardamom powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon saffron
  • 2 tablespoons chopped almonds, pistachios, and cashews
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Preparation Method

  1. Strain the Curd: To make Shrikhand, start by straining the curd through a muslin cloth or a fine strainer to remove excess water and make the curd thicker.

  2. Mix Ingredients: Transfer the strained curd into a bowl and mix in the powdered sugar. If the curd is too thick, add milk to adjust the consistency.

  3. Flavor the Mixture: Add black cardamom powder and soaked saffron to the mixture. For additional flavor, you can also add cinnamon and vanilla extract if desired.

  4. Add Cream: For a richer and creamier texture, mix in some cream. Stir the mixture thoroughly.

  5. Chill the Shrikhand: Cover the bowl and refrigerate the Shrikhand for at least 2 to 3 hours to chill.

  6. Garnish: Before serving, add the chopped nuts such as almonds, pistachios, and cashews to the Shrikhand.
