Dhanteras Preparations Underway

As Dhanteras approaches, households are bustling with cleaning activities. Some individuals are meticulously polishing every corner of their homes, while others are focused on setting up for worship. A crucial aspect of these preparations is ensuring that the home shrine (puja space) is also cleaned thoroughly. Vastu Shastra emphasizes the importance of details, from the positioning of idols to the removal of any broken or damaged items. Astrologer Pandit Akhilesh Pandey from Rishikesh has indicated that Dhanteras will be celebrated on November 6th (Friday) this year.

Significance of Dhanteras

This important festival, which leads into Diwali, symbolizes wealth, prosperity, and health. It is believed that honoring Lord Dhanvantari, Goddess Lakshmi, and Lord Kuber on this day invites happiness and abundance into the home. Many people consider it auspicious to buy gold, silver, utensils, or other new items during Dhanteras. On this day, individuals clean their main entrances and home shrines, light lamps, and kick off their Diwali preparations.

Cleaning the Home Shrine

Astrologer Akhilesh Pandey shares several important tips for cleaning the home shrine before Dhanteras. First, it is essential to remove any broken idols and dispose of old, wilted flowers and garlands. According to Vastu Shastra, it is ideal to face east or north while worshipping; thus, arrange the idols to allow ample space in front for worship, ensuring they are not directly against the wall. Clear out any old papers, empty containers, or unnecessary clutter from the shrine area. The space for lamps should be kept immaculate, and worship items like *roli* (vermilion), rice, camphor, and incense sticks should be stored in clean containers.

Decorating with Natural Elements

Opt for Natural Over Artificial.
Astrologer Pandit Akhilesh Pandey advises that, in preparation for Dhanteras, it is more auspicious to adorn the home shrine with a *toran* (garland/festoons) made from mango leaves instead of artificial flowers. In Hindu tradition, mango leaves are highly revered and are commonly used to create *torans* during religious ceremonies and festivals. It is believed that a *toran* made of mango leaves brings positive energy into the home and symbolizes happiness and prosperity, while also enhancing the visual appeal of the space.
