Introduction to Chaitra Navratri

Guidelines for Creating the *Chauki* (Altar) in Chaitra Navratri: This year, Chaitra Navratri commences on March 19, 2026. Over these nine days dedicated to honoring *Shakti* (the Divine Feminine), followers set up a *Chauki* (sacred altar) for Goddess Durga in their homes. However, any mistakes regarding the placement or rituals associated with the *Chauki* may hinder the spiritual benefits of the worship. The scriptures provide several crucial guidelines for establishing the *Chauki*. Let’s delve into these rules.

Key Rules for Setting Up the Chauki

The *Chauki* for the Goddess should ideally be positioned in the *Ishan Kon* (North-East corner). Worshipping from this direction is believed to enhance positive energy. On the other hand, incorrect placement can reduce the effectiveness of the worship.

Some worshippers may place multiple idols or images on the altar. However, scriptures advise against having more than two idols in one location, as having three is considered inauspicious.

During Navratri, the color black is viewed as inauspicious. It is inappropriate to wear black clothing or use black fabric in the worship area. Instead, it is recommended to use auspicious colors like red and yellow.

The *Kalash Sthapana* (installation of the sacred pot) is particularly significant. The *Kalash* should be placed to the right of the Goddess Durga's idol or image. Incorrect positioning may prevent the devotee from receiving the full spiritual benefits of the worship.
