Diwali Lakshmi Puja Instructions for 2026

Diwali Lakshmi Puja Instructions 2026: The celebration of Diwali is a time to invite Goddess Lakshmi into our homes and seek her blessings. On this auspicious day, both Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha are honored through specific rituals. It is believed that sincere worship, conducted correctly, brings joy, prosperity, tranquility, and wellness to the household. However, there are important considerations to keep in mind during the worship. Let's delve into the items that should be included in the Lakshmi Puja *thali* (offering tray), the order of worship, and common mistakes to avoid.

Items to Include in the Lakshmi Puja *thali*:

When assembling the *thali* for Lakshmi Puja during Diwali, certain key items should be present, as they symbolize prosperity and good fortune.

Roli and Kumkum: These are essential for applying a *tilak* on the deities.
Akshat (Unbroken Rice Grains): *Akshat*, or unbroken rice, is significant in worship and is offered with the *tilak*.

Oil Lamp and Cotton Wicks: A lamp filled with ghee or oil and extra cotton wicks should be included in the *thali*.
Flowers and Garlands: The lotus flower is particularly favored by Goddess Lakshmi, along with marigolds and other floral garlands.

Incense, *Agarbatti* (incense sticks), and Camphor: These items are used to create a pleasant aroma and for performing *aarti*.

Betel Leaf (*Paan*) and Betel Nut (*Supari*): These should also be part of the ritual offerings.

Sweets and Fruits: Offer sweets, *kheel-batashe* (puffed rice and sugar drops), and seasonal fruits to Goddess Lakshmi.

Coconut and *Kalava* (Sacred Thread): A coconut, *kalava*, and *dakshina* (offering) are also necessary for the worship.
Sandalwood and Turmeric: These are used for applying *tilak* and during the rituals.

Additionally, a bell and camphor for *aarti* can be placed in the *thali*.

Order of Worship During Lakshmi Puja:

In Hindu tradition, it is customary to begin any auspicious event by honoring Lord Ganesha first. He is known as the 'first to be worshipped' (*Pratham Pujya*) and the 'remover of obstacles' (*Vighnaharta*). Therefore, during Diwali, one should first invoke Lord Ganesha, followed by the worship of Goddess Lakshmi. This practice is believed to eliminate obstacles in one's endeavors while inviting the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi for wealth and abundance.

Common Mistakes to Avoid During Lakshmi Puja:

While performing the rituals on Diwali, certain precautions should be observed. According to tradition, pay attention to the following:

Ensure the worship area and home are clean and organized before starting the rituals.
Avoid using damaged or broken idols for worship.
Do not entertain feelings of anger, jealousy, or negativity during the worship.
Refrain from offering stale flowers or spoiled food (*bhog*) to the deities.
Do not rush through the rituals or get up frequently during the process.
Remember to worship Lord Ganesha along with Goddess Lakshmi.
Be careful when lighting lamps (*diyas*); keep them away from curtains or flammable materials.
After the worship, treat the *prasad* (offered food) with reverence and share it among family members with devotion.
