Dr. Anil Bansal, a senior physician and former President of the Delhi Medical Association, explained to a Media Channel that ORS is composed of a specific mixture of sodium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium citrate, and glucose. The effectiveness of ORS is attributed to the sodium-glucose co-transport mechanism. Typically, sodium absorption in the intestines is challenging; however, glucose facilitates this process by drawing sodium into the bloodstream. This mechanism also allows for rapid water absorption through the intestinal walls, enabling quick rehydration for those who are dehydrated.
Benefits of ORS
Dr. Bansal further noted that potassium in ORS is vital for the proper functioning of muscles and the heart, especially since these minerals are often depleted due to diarrhea or excessive sweating. Sodium citrate plays a role in regulating the body's acidity, which can increase during dehydration. This careful formulation makes ORS significantly more effective than simply mixing water with salt and sugar, as it accurately restores electrolyte balance. Experts recommend using ORS when dehydration symptoms arise. If you experience frequent diarrhea, ongoing vomiting, or excessive sweating and dizziness from heat, it’s advisable to start taking ORS.
Recognizing Dehydration Symptoms
Additionally, signs such as decreased urination, dry mouth, or fatigue indicate that your body urgently needs electrolyte replenishment. For children, if they seem less energetic or do not cry with tears, ORS should be given under medical supervision.
Preparing and Using ORS Effectively
Medical experts emphasize the importance of preparing ORS correctly to maximize its benefits. Always mix one packet of commercially available ORS with precisely one liter of boiled and cooled drinking water. Using too little or too much water can disrupt the electrolyte balance of the solution. Once prepared, the ORS should be consumed within 24 hours, and any leftover solution should be discarded. It is best to drink it slowly, allowing the intestines adequate time to absorb it. Avoid adding extra sugar, honey, or fruit juice to the ORS, as this can reduce its effectiveness.
