Effective Strategies for Conserving LPG at Home Amid Global Energy Instability

As global energy markets face instability due to geopolitical tensions, conserving LPG at home has become essential. This article outlines practical strategies for households to save gas while cooking, including the use of pressure cookers, proper ingredient preparation, and maintaining clean burners. By implementing these tips, families can effectively manage their LPG usage and reduce costs during these challenging times. Explore these methods to ensure efficient cooking and energy conservation in your home.

Navigating LPG Conservation in Challenging Times

The current tensions between Iran and the Israel-US coalition have led to significant fluctuations in the global energy sector. Specifically, disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz are affecting the supply and pricing of LPG in India.

This volatility is disrupting LPG supply chains. While the government is working hard to maintain a consistent supply for households—implementing a 25-day inter-booking period—it is crucial for families to be mindful and conserve gas in the upcoming days. Here are some practical tips for using LPG more efficiently at home.

Utilize Pressure Cookers Effectively
One of the simplest and most efficient ways to save gas is by using a pressure cooker. Cooking lentils, rice, and vegetables in a pressure cooker instead of open pots can save you 20–30% of gas and time.

Prepare Ingredients Before Cooking
Many of us turn on the gas stove before we finish preparing our ingredients. To avoid wasting gas, make sure all vegetables are chopped, spices are ready, and all necessary items are in place before igniting the burner. This practice prevents unnecessary gas usage.

Cover Your Cooking Vessels
Cooking without a lid allows heat to escape, prolonging cooking time. Always cover your pan or *kadhai* (wok) while cooking to trap steam, which helps food cook faster.

Maintain Clean Burners and Utensils
A dirty burner can lead to increased gas consumption. If your flame is yellow or orange instead of blue, it’s time to clean the burner. Additionally, ensure that wet utensils are dried before placing them on the stove to avoid wasting gas to evaporate excess water.

Adjust Flame and Use Appropriate Utensils
Always match the burner size and flame intensity to the cooking vessel. Wide, flat-bottomed pots and pans absorb heat more effectively. Keep the flame at medium or low; a high flame often escapes around the sides, wasting energy.

Leverage Electric Appliances
If you have an induction cooktop, rice cooker, or electric kettle, use them more frequently. For tasks like boiling water or heating milk, an electric kettle can be a highly efficient alternative to gas.
