Samak Kheer Recipe for Navratri

Samak Kheer Recipe: The observance of Chaitra Navratri 2026 is currently underway. According to the Hindu calendar, Chaitra Navratri commences on the *Pratipada* (first day) of the *Shukla Paksha* (waxing moon phase) in the month of Chaitra. The festivities began on March 19th, with Durga Ashtami occurring on March 26th and Navami on March 27th. During this period, devotees honor the nine divine forms of Goddess Durga. Many choose to fast throughout the nine days, while others may only observe fasts on the first, eighth (Ashtami), and ninth (Navami) days, depending on their personal beliefs and physical capabilities.

During these fasting days, individuals typically consume *Sattvic* (pure) and *Phalahari* (fruit-based) foods. Acceptable items include *Makhana* (fox nuts), *Kuttu* (buckwheat), halwa made from *Singhara* (water chestnut) flour, *Poori*, *Roti*, *Sabudana Khichdi*, *Samak* rice, along with various fruits and vegetables like potatoes, bottle gourd, and pumpkin. A delightful dish to prepare for Navratri is *Samak* rice kheer (pudding), which is nutritious, light, and easy to digest, providing lasting energy throughout the day. Chef Kunal Kapur has shared a special recipe for *Samak* Kheer on his Instagram account, @Chefkunal, tailored for those observing fasts during Navratri. Let’s explore how to quickly whip up this delicious and healthy *Samak* rice kheer on a fasting day.

Ingredients for Samak Kheer:

*   Milk: 1 liter
*   Samak Rice: 1/4 cup
*   Jaggery or Sugar: 1/2 cup
*   Dry Fruits: Almonds, Raisins, Cashews, Pistachios
*   Water: 1/4 cup
*   Cinnamon Powder: 1 teaspoon

Method for Preparing Samak Kheer:

Begin by finely chopping all the dry fruits. In a pot, pour the milk and bring it to a boil, stirring continuously to avoid sticking. Rinse the *Samak* rice twice under water, then add it to the boiling milk and continue cooking. In another pan, add a quarter cup of water and dissolve the sugar or jaggery completely. Pour this mixture into the pot with the *Samak* rice, stirring continuously. Next, incorporate the chopped dry fruits and cinnamon powder, mixing thoroughly. Once the kheer thickens, remove it from the heat and transfer it to a serving bowl. Optionally, garnish with additional dry fruits. Your nutritious and healthy Samak Kheer, ideal for fasting days, is now ready to enjoy.
