Clarification on Passport's Status

This week, the Ministry of External Affairs made a statement during the 14th Passport Seva Divas, emphasizing that a passport is fundamentally a travel document and does not inherently serve as proof of citizenship. This announcement has faced significant backlash, particularly from renowned writer and lyricist Javed Akhtar.

At 81 years old, Akhtar expressed his disbelief on social media, questioning how the government can issue passports if it is not entirely convinced of an applicant's citizenship. His remarks ignited a broader discussion both online and offline.

Actor and producer Anupama Prakash noted that this clarification surprised many. She stated, “We have always perceived a passport as the definitive identity document. If the legal interpretation differs, it’s crucial for citizens to be informed. Understanding these nuances is vital, as documentation impacts daily activities, from travel to official dealings.”

Frequent traveler and actress Deepti Bhatnagar called for more transparency from the authorities. She remarked, “If the law differentiates between a travel document and citizenship proof, the public deserves clear and straightforward explanations.
