Understanding Vat Savitri Vrat

The Vat Savitri Vrat is a significant and revered fast among married women in Hindu culture. This annual observance occurs in the month of Jyeshtha, where women engage in fasting to pray for their husbands' health, happiness, and prosperity. In 2026, the Vat Savitri Vrat will take place on May 15, followed by the worship of the Banyan tree (Vat Vriksha) on May 16. On this day, women typically observe a *Nirjala* (waterless) fast and adhere to traditional worship rituals. However, many urban women may find it challenging to access Banyan trees, and those observing the fast for the first time might be unfamiliar with the proper worship methods. To assist, Pandit Nandkishore Mudgal, a respected astrologer from Deoghar, has provided a straightforward approach for conducting the Vat Savitri worship at home.

Astrologer's Guidance for Worship

Insights from Pandit Nandkishore Mudgal
Pandit Nandkishore Mudgal, associated with the Mudgal Jyotish Kendra at Pagal Baba Ashram in Deoghar, advises women without immediate access to a Banyan tree to obtain a small branch a day or two prior to the worship day and plant it in a pot. On May 16, after their morning rituals, they should wear clean clothes and, while meditating on Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, worship the Banyan tree, honoring it as a representation of the divine couple. The rituals should be performed facing North.

Worship Rituals and Offerings

Begin by offering water to the Banyan tree, followed by *Roli* (sacred red powder), *Akshat* (unbroken rice), flowers, and *Shringar* (bridal adornments). Next, light a *Diya* (lamp) filled with *Ghee* (clarified butter) and conduct the worship according to traditional practices. Listening to the *Vat Savitri Katha* (legend) during the ceremony is deemed highly auspicious. After the story, women should take a strand of *Moli* (sacred red thread) or raw cotton thread and circle the Banyan tree 108 times, wrapping the thread around it with each round. This ritual is believed to ensure the husband's long life and maintain happiness in the marriage.

Worship at Home: A Valid Option

Worship of the Banyan Tree at Home
The astrologer emphasizes that the key components of the worship are *Shraddha* (faith) and *Vishwas* (sincerity). If the fast and rituals are performed with genuine devotion, the worship at home is considered equally effective as that conducted in temples or pilgrimage sites. On this day, many women also present items symbolizing marital happiness, such as bangles, vermilion (sindoor), bindis, ceremonial scarves (chunaris), and red foot dye (mahavar). They pray for their husbands' longevity while seeking blessings from Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati for a joyful married life. The Banyan tree is regarded as the home of the Trinity—Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Mahesh (Shiva); thus, its worship is believed to confer significant spiritual benefits.
