Celebrating Chaitra Navratri 2026: The Significance of Akhand Jyoti
Chaitra Navratri 2026 and the Importance of Akhand Jyoti
Chaitra Navratri 2026 Akhand Jyoti: The nine-day festival of Navratri is a time for the ritualistic worship of Goddess Durga, which holds immense importance for devotees. This year, Chaitra Navratri begins on April 9th, coinciding with the start of the Hindu New Year. A cherished custom during this period is to observe fasting and to ignite an *Akhand Jyoti* (eternal flame) in honor of the Mother Goddess.
Lighting the *Akhand Jyoti* is believed to please the Goddess, prompting her to grant the desires of her devotees. If you wish to participate in this tradition, it is crucial to understand the guidelines and materials needed for lighting the *Akhand Jyoti*.
Necessary Materials for Lighting the Akhand Jyoti
To light the *Akhand Jyoti*, you will need the following items:
- A brass lamp (*Diya*)
- Pure *Desi Ghee* (clarified butter)
- A long, thick cotton wick
- *Akshat* (unbroken rice grains) or wheat grains
Steps to Light the Akhand Jyoti
Begin by taking a ritual bath and cleansing the area designated for worship. Cover the altar (*Chowki*) with a red cloth. Next, create a *Swastika* symbol using rice or wheat grains on the cloth and position the lamp on top of it. Insert the wick into the lamp, fill it with *Ghee*, and while meditating on Goddess Durga, light the flame. According to *Vastu Shastra*, it is highly auspicious to light the lamp in the South-East direction of your home.
Guidelines for Maintaining the Akhand Jyoti
While lighting the lamp, it is considered beneficial to chant the mantra "Shubham Karoti Kalyanam...". The lamp should be placed on a mound of grains (rice or wheat). A lamp fueled by *Ghee* should be positioned on the right, while one fueled by oil should be on the left. Ensure that someone is always present in the house while the flame is lit, and regularly replenish the *Ghee* or oil to keep the lamp burning. After the nine days, allow the flame to extinguish naturally.
Advantages of Lighting the Akhand Jyoti
Religious beliefs suggest that lighting the *Akhand Jyoti* brings the continuous blessings of Goddess Durga, inviting joy, peace, and prosperity into the home. It is said to eliminate negative energies and create a positive, harmonious environment. Furthermore, devotees believe that their wishes will be fulfilled, leading to happiness in their lives.
