Celebrating Assamese Heritage at Cannes: Manish Malhotra's Couture Showcase
A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity at Cannes
At the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, renowned Indian designer Manish Malhotra showcased the rich heritage of Assam, bringing it to the forefront of global fashion. The mother-daughter pair, Urmimala Baruah and Snigdha Baruah, captivated audiences with their custom-made outfits that reflect the cultural essence of Northeast India.
Malhotra's designs offered a contemporary twist on Assamese traditions. Urmimala expressed, “This moment transcends mere fashion; it signifies visibility. The Northeast has often been overlooked in mainstream narratives, and appearances like this are crucial for highlighting our identity on a global stage like Cannes.” Snigdha emphasized, “We are not conforming to a broader narrative; instead, we aim to showcase our unique story. Assam has its distinct identity, and it rightfully deserves representation on international platforms.”
