Celebrating 25 Years: Tillotama Shome and Dia Mirza Reflect on Their Journeys at IKKA Trailer Launch

At the Mumbai trailer launch of Netflix's IKKA, Tillotama Shome and Dia Mirza reflect on their 25-year journeys in the film industry. Shome, known for her roles in independent cinema, and Mirza, who has proven her depth beyond beauty, discuss their evolving careers and the significance of their roles in IKKA. With heartfelt moments and mutual admiration, they highlight the importance of choice over mere survival in their long-standing careers. As they prepare for the film's release on July 10, their stories resonate with the essence of growth and collaboration in the world of cinema.

A Milestone Moment for Tillotama Shome

It took me 25 years to reach this stage,” Tillotama Shome expressed with her signature blend of nervous energy and unwavering confidence during the Mumbai trailer launch of Netflix’s IKKA. As she stepped onto the stage, tears welled up in her eyes, unable to hold back. “It’s quite surreal,” she added.

Two Distinct Paths in Cinema

Beside her was Dia Mirza, representing two careers that have traversed the same 25 years but in contrasting ways. Shome has become a beloved figure in India’s independent film scene, while Mirza, who entered the industry when mainstream cinema often reduced women to mere beauty, has spent her time showcasing her multifaceted talents.

Roles in IKKA

In IKKA, directed by Siddharth P Malhotra, Shome portrays Madhura Banerjee, a determined public prosecutor engaged in a courtroom showdown against renowned lawyer Arjun Mehra, played by Sunny Deol. Mirza takes on the role of Avantika, Arjun’s wife, whose life begins to unravel as he defends Shauryamann Gaur (Akshaye Khanna) in a high-stakes attempted murder trial.

Mirza's Perspective on Experience

For Mirza, her 25 years in the industry have been more about preparation than the spotlight. She emphasizes that her experiences have equipped her for the profound roles she embraces today. “Some of my most cherished moments are the silences… the interactions with my (on-screen) daughter and husband,” she noted, expressing a longing for a scene with Shome.

Shome's New Territory

Shome, on the other hand, finds herself exploring new ground. “I’ve never played a lawyer before,” she shared. “This role allows me to step away from the typical middle-class characters I’m often cast as. It’s about portraying a powerful woman.”

Breaking Boundaries

She openly discusses the industry's tendency to create divisions between ‘actors’ and ‘stars,’ yet IKKA offers her a chance to embody a larger-than-life character, striding confidently in her lawyer’s robes. The barriers seem to fade away.

Sunny Deol's Kindness

Surprisingly, Sunny Deol was not taken aback by Shome’s presence. She admitted to initially wanting to avoid interaction with him, fearing he might not appreciate her approach. However, she was charmed by his “cow-like” kind eyes, a compliment she repeated throughout the evening.

A Focus on Authenticity

Shome prefers not to reference other films for inspiration, as she believes it leads to imitation. At this stage in her career, she seeks authenticity and connection with her colleagues. “At my age, I want to enjoy working with the people I collaborate with… or I can just stay home with my beautiful family,” she stated.

Mutual Admiration

Throughout the event, Deol offered compliments to both women, while Mirza, embodying the spirit of a supportive friend, celebrated Shome’s talent and even her vibrant stockings peeking from her outfit!

A Shift in Conversation

It was moving to witness these women reflect on their journeys after 25 years. Their dialogue shifted from survival to choice, focusing less on recognition and more on their craft.

The Essence of Their Story

Perhaps this is the transformation that comes with time. The discussion is no longer about reaching a destination but about the companions you choose to uplift along the way.

IKKA's Release Date

Viewers can catch IKKA on Netflix starting July 10.
