Brad Pitt Opens Up About His Return to Alcohol After Seven Years of Sobriety
Brad Pitt's Journey Back to Drinking
In a recent interview with Esquire, Brad Pitt revealed that he has started drinking alcohol again after a seven-year period of sobriety. The 62-year-old actor emphasized that he now carefully monitors his alcohol intake.
During the conversation, Pitt poured a glass of wine for the interviewer, which prompted a discussion about his relationship with alcohol. He candidly shared, "I was sober for seven years, and then I got back off the wagon," adding that he approaches drinking with more caution now. "I got overconfident a couple of times, thinking, 'Yep, nope, not good for me.' Not in large amounts," he explained.
When asked about his daily drinking habits, Pitt stated, "I can have a few glasses of wine, but I can't have a lot. I have to be professional about it."
Pitt's struggles with substance use have been documented over the years. In a 2017 GQ interview, he admitted that he hadn't experienced a single sober day since his college years, having dealt with alcohol, marijuana, and other substances. Two years later, he disclosed to The New York Times that he had participated in an all-male Alcoholics Anonymous group for eighteen months, a decision influenced by his divorce from Angelina Jolie in 2016.
Reflecting on his recovery journey during a 2025 appearance on the Armchair Expert podcast with Dax Shepard, Pitt expressed gratitude for the support he found in recovery meetings. He described them as an "amazing thing," highlighting the honesty and camaraderie among the participants: "Incredible men sharing their experiences, their foibles, their missteps, their wants, their aches, and a lot of humor with it." He recalled feeling "shy" at his first meetings but committed to remaining "really open" despite his struggles.
Additionally, Pitt discussed his upcoming project, where he will reprise his role as stuntman Cliff Booth in Netflix's The Adventures of Cliff Booth, directed by David Fincher and written by Quentin Tarantino. Rather than a traditional sequel, he described the film as a series of interconnected episodes. It is set to have a two-week exclusive run in IMAX starting November 25, before its Netflix release on December 23.
