We've all experienced post-shave irritation and discomfort. Whether it's razor burn, redness or ingrown hairs, shaving can sometimes leave our skin feeling less than perfect. However, with the right skincare routine, you can minimize these problems and achieve a clearer, smoother complexion. Let's delve into the essentials of post-shave skin care and explore best practices for maintaining clean and healthy skin.

What should your skincare routine include?
Dr. Mutha recommends that your post-shave skincare routine should include the following essential steps:

1) Cleaning
Begin by gently cleansing your skin with a non-irritating cleanser. This will remove any remaining shaving cream, dead skin cells and pollutants from your skin, enabling it to breathe and recover. According to a study published in the Indian Journal of Dermatology, cleansers have advanced dramatically from merely serving as cleansing agents to remove sebum, debris, dead cells and microbes from the skin.

2) Toning
Follow with a soothing toner to balance your skin's pH level and tighten your pores. Dr. Look for toners that are alcohol-free and contain ingredients like chamomile or witch hazel to calm and hydrate the skin, Mutha said.

3) Moisturizing
Use a moisturizer specifically designed for aftershave care, as these formulations often contain soothing ingredients like aloe vera or chamomile. Apply moisturizer liberally to replenish moisture and protect your skin's natural barrier.

4) Sun protection
Never skip the sunscreen even when you shave. Shaving can make your skin more susceptible to sun damage. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

Don'ts for clean skin after shaving
1) Avoid harsh ingredients

Dr. Mutha advises to stay away from products containing alcohol, fragrance or harsh chemicals, as these can strip your skin of its natural oils and increase inflammation.

2) Do not touch your skin
Resist the temptation to touch or pick at any ingrown hairs or razor bumps. This can lead to further inflammation, infection and scarring.

3) Release the hot water
While a warm shower or bath before shaving can help soften hair follicles, avoid using hot water on your face immediately after shaving. Dr. Mutha warns that hot water can dehydrate your skin and increase sensitivity.
