Arianna Meloni: The Influential Sister Behind Italy's First Female Prime Minister

Arianna Meloni, sister of Italy's first female Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, plays a crucial yet understated role in her sister's political journey. While Giorgia has become a prominent figure in European politics, Arianna has remained largely behind the scenes, focusing on organizational tasks within the ruling party. Their close bond, shaped by a challenging upbringing, has been pivotal in Giorgia's rise to power. This article explores Arianna's influence, her political involvement, and the dynamics of their relationship, shedding light on the personal and political aspects that define their lives.

The Power Behind the Throne

In modern politics, power seldom stands alone. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is supported by a tight-knit group of loyal allies, including her older sister, Arianna Meloni, who plays a significant role in her political journey. Giorgia's ascent has been rapid, marking her as Italy's first female prime minister and a key figure in European politics, maneuvering through a divided political environment while receiving both fervent support and ongoing criticism for her views. Arianna is a crucial part of this dynamic, providing essential support behind the scenes.

Although Arianna has been politically active since the age of 17, she has maintained a low profile, often stating, “I am not running for office.” Unlike her sister, who has gained international recognition, Arianna prefers to work quietly, focusing on organizational tasks rather than public appearances. As the party secretary of Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy), the ruling right-wing party led by Giorgia, she has been influential even before her formal appointment in 2023, having informally taken on the role for some time.

Paolo Zampolli, the U.S. Special Representative for Global Partnerships, once shared a photo with Arianna on social media, calling her “a truly important figure for the Republic.” He referenced comments made by former President Donald Trump regarding Giorgia, expressing his pleasure in knowing Arianna, who is equally remarkable.

Arianna has been one of Giorgia's closest advisors. In an interview with a prominent publication, she discussed her sister's honesty, stating, “She’s always been like this, since she was a child.” The sisters have also attempted to mend their relationship with their father, who abandoned them when Giorgia was just three. They initially lived in an affluent area of Rome, but after a fire destroyed their home, they moved to Garbatella, a working-class neighborhood, where they faced significant challenges.

This difficult upbringing strengthened their bond. Arianna noted, “It gave her greater grit... that made her the Giorgia she is today.” Giorgia has publicly praised her sister, calling her “the best person I have met on this earth.” Arianna is known to have defended Giorgia from bullies during their childhood.

In her memoir, Io Sono Giorgia (I Am Giorgia), Giorgia expressed, “She experiences everything that happens to me as if it were happening to her.” She also mentioned that Arianna is the only person she feels a strong need to call and talk to.

In 2023, Arianna took legal action against cartoonist Mario Natangelo for a satirical drawing published in a daily newspaper. The cartoon depicted her, then married to Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida, in a controversial scenario. Lollobrigida, a close ally of Giorgia, had previously stirred controversy with remarks about the “ethnic replacement” of Italians due to migration, which added to the cartoon's contentious nature.
