Argentinian Yoga Star Shines at World Yogasana Championships
A Star in the Spotlight
As the inaugural World Yogasana Championships unfold, Indian yoga athletes and their Indian-origin peers are taking center stage. However, it is an agile South American competitor who has captured the attention of both spectators and fellow participants with her graceful and precise asana performances.
Nabila Sol Barraza's Triumph
Nabila Sol Barraza from Argentina stands out as one of the most accomplished international competitors, having secured five medals in total, including two golds and two silvers. She attributes her remarkable journey to yoga, which she claims has profoundly changed her life.
Nabila's Journey to India
Hailing from a town near Rosario, the birthplace of football legend Lionel Messi, Nabila's introduction to Yogasana came through a college friend. What started as mere curiosity blossomed into a deep passion, leading her to Mumbai, where she spent nearly five years.
During her time in India, she learned Hindi, embraced local traditions, worked as a background dancer in Bollywood films, collaborated with actor Tiger Shroff, and even developed a newfound love for cricket.
"Understanding the fervor for cricket in India was easy for me, given Argentina's passion for football," Nabila shared, expressing her admiration for former Indian captain Virat Kohli.
While cricket opened a window into Indian culture, yoga unveiled a deeper connection. Intrigued by its philosophy, Nabila traveled to Rishikesh, known as the yoga capital of the world, before continuing her studies in Nashik.
This transformative experience has significantly influenced the life of the 30-year-old contemporary dance trainer, who was raised by a single mother alongside her siblings.
A Journey of Dedication and Hope
Nabila's travels across India have left a lasting impact on her. Earlier this year, she relocated to Colombia, where she now offers yoga classes both online and in-person.
Her dedication was evident even before she arrived at the championship in Ahmedabad, having endured a challenging 48-hour journey from Bogota to Toronto, then London, Mumbai, and finally Ahmedabad.
As Argentina's sole representative, Nabila excelled, winning gold in both the Twisting Body and Back Bend individual categories. She hopes her achievements will motivate others in her home country.
"I may be the only Argentine here this year, but I believe that will change in the future," she stated. "These championships provide a fantastic opportunity to promote yoga globally, and I am confident that more individuals from Argentina and Colombia will want to join in next time."
