Youth and Journalists Unite in Kathmandu to Defend Press Freedom
Protests Erupt Over Press Freedom Concerns
In Kathmandu, a coalition of young activists and journalists gathered to voice their concerns regarding alleged violations of press freedom. This demonstration was sparked by the recent temporary detention of three journalists and police searches at various media outlets.
The rally, held at Maitighar Mandala, saw numerous participants dressed in black, brandishing signs with messages such as 'Why intervene with media?', 'Journalism is not a crime', and 'End media suppression'.
The demonstrators called for the protection of press freedom, freedom of expression, and the safeguarding of democratic rights.
Youth activist Puskar Bastola, addressing the crowd, criticized the government led by Balendra Shah for its perceived attacks on the media, asserting that there are ongoing attempts to undermine citizens' freedom of speech.
He warned that as the government trends towards authoritarianism, they would remain vigilant against such developments.
The recent unrest followed reports from several newspapers and online platforms regarding Prime Minister Balendra Shah's call for the resignation of Nepal Police Inspector General Dan Bahadur Karki, who is under scrutiny for alleged connections to Inam Sapkota, currently in custody on charges of money laundering and inappropriate conduct.
Earlier this week, Karki was dismissed from his position, with Manoj Kumar KC appointed as the new inspector general.
