Winter's Arrival in Himachal Pradesh

Pallavi Sharma
Dharamshala:
As winter settles in across Himachal Pradesh, a pressing question looms over everyone, from visitors to hotel proprietors: will the hill stations be graced with a picturesque white Christmas? With the cold already making its presence felt and temperatures dropping in various areas, meteorologists indicate that the upcoming days will be pivotal in determining if snowfall will occur in time for the holiday festivities.

Weather Forecast for the Coming Days

According to the Meteorological Centre in Shimla, the state is expected to experience dry conditions for the next few days. However, a western disturbance is anticipated to activate around December 20 and 21, potentially bringing light rain and snowfall to higher elevations.

Potential for Snowfall in High-Altitude Areas

Experts suggest that isolated snowfall may occur in the high-altitude regions of Lahaul-Spiti, Chamba, Kullu, Kangra, and Mandi districts. While widespread snowfall in popular hill stations remains uncertain, this weather system could further lower temperatures and enhance the likelihood of fresh snow just before Christmas.

Cold Wave Intensifies

The cold wave has already made its mark, with mid-hill and plain areas experiencing a drop of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in minimum temperatures, resulting in districts like Una and Hamirpur being colder than Shimla.

Kukumseri in Lahaul-Spiti has recorded the lowest temperatures in the state, while numerous locations in the hills and valleys are facing near-freezing nights. Weather officials state that sustained cold conditions are conducive to snowfall if a robust weather system arrives.

Tourism Sector Hopes for a White Christmas

The tourism industry is closely monitoring the weather forecasts. Hoteliers, merchants, and taxi operators in hill stations such as Shimla, Manali, Kufri, and Narkanda are optimistic that fresh snowfall will align with Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Many believe that a white Christmas could significantly enhance last-minute bookings and visitor numbers, which typically peak during the holiday season. Tourists are also hoping for snowfall to enjoy the snow-covered landscapes, while local businesses are eager for a revival in winter tourism after a period of low activity.

Anticipation Builds in Himachal's Hill Towns

As Christmas approaches, excitement is mounting in the hill towns of Himachal. Will nature fulfill the hopes of both tourists and traders? The next few days will likely determine whether the festive season will be adorned with snow or remain dry and chilly,” remarked a hotelier from Shimla.
