Wildfire Threatens Oak Creek Canyon


A wildfire has ignited north of Sedona, Arizona, prompting local authorities to initiate evacuations in certain areas of Oak Creek Canyon. This incident, referred to as the Pocket Fire, was first reported on Friday within the Red Rock-Secret Mountain Wilderness Area, which encompasses parts of Coconino and Yavapai counties. The Sedona Fire District is actively collaborating with partner agencies as firefighting crews respond to the situation. In a statement, they noted, "Sedona Fire is aware of the new wildland fire north of town. We are coordinating with all our local partners. The Coconino National Forest has air resources over the fire." As per the wildfire tracking service Watch Duty, the fire had expanded to approximately 100 acres by Friday. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, and officials have yet to disclose the cause of the fire or its containment status.


Evacuations have commenced along Forest Road 231 and in parts of Oak Creek Canyon, according to Watch Duty. Local news outlets indicated that the fire was visible from Sedona Airport, with residents and visitors sharing images and videos of smoke billowing into the sky. One individual posted on social media, stating, "Huge fire spotted north of Camp Verde near Sedona. Oh lawd." Another resident emphasized fire safety, sharing a video that showcased smoke in the distance. They urged, "As we enter another hot summer in Sedona, this is your reminder that fire awareness matters. Please adhere to all local fire restrictions, avoid activities that may spark fires, properly extinguish cigarettes, never leave campfires unattended, and be cautious about parking over dry grass or using equipment that could ignite vegetation. One spark can change everything." The post further highlighted the collective responsibility of protecting the landscapes, wildlife, homes, and community that make Sedona unique.


Videos circulating online depicted thick smoke rising from the fire area, with reports of evacuations in the Oak Creek Canyon and Junipine regions.

Other images shared online appeared to capture the fire from nearby roads and surrounding communities. One traveler en route to Sedona remarked, "On my way to my gig at the Hilton in Sedona." Another simply noted, "Fire in Sedona." A different post from a traveler coming from Flagstaff stated, "The Pocket Fire in the Secret Mountain/Red Rocks area. I took this coming from Flagstaff. Hope it is extinguished soon." Emergency crews remained on-site Friday as they continued their efforts to contain the wildfire.
