Vikram Doraiswami Takes on a New Role

New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has announced that Vikram K Doraiswami, who is currently serving as India's High Commissioner to the UK, will be the next Ambassador to the People's Republic of China.

Doraiswami, an officer from the 1992 batch of the Indian Foreign Service, is set to assume his new position soon.

He took on the role of High Commissioner to the UK in August 2022, following his tenure as High Commissioner to Bangladesh.

After completing his in-service training in New Delhi from 1992 to 1993, he began his career at the Indian Commission in Hong Kong in May 1994 as a Third Secretary. During this time, he pursued an elective diploma in Chinese at the New Asia Yale-in-Asia language school.

In September 1996, he was assigned to the Indian Embassy in Beijing, where he spent nearly four years.

Doraiswami also worked at the Prime Minister’s Office in 2002 and served as the Private Secretary to the Prime Minister of India. In 2006, he became the Political Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations in New York.

In October 2009, he was appointed as India's Consul General in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The MEA noted that Doraiswami returned to New Delhi in July 2011, where he led the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) division until October 2012. He also coordinated the Fourth BRICS Summit in New Delhi in March 2012.

A highly experienced diplomat, he served as Joint Secretary of the Americas Division from October 2012 to October 2014 before becoming India's Ambassador to Uzbekistan in late October 2014. He took on the role of Ambassador to South Korea in April 2015.

Currently, Pradeep Kumar Rawat, who has been with the Indian Foreign Service since 1990, is serving as India's Ambassador to China. Rawat, who also studied Mandarin, has had extensive experience in Hong Kong and Beijing, having started his second tenure in Beijing in 2003 and concluding it in 2007. He was appointed as Ambassador to China in December 2021.
